The people here probably have as good an insight into _____ as one could expect. So I wonder: What is wrong with _____? Another question is how to fix it, but I get the impression I would get answers about enemas.

I just noticed my constant assumption about how _____ is a fragile thing. But the reality is that it may be broken. It came across a subject it could absolutely not talk about rationally.

I think perhaps I may have a part in it. Slaytanic killer is a volatile character. However, a sign of weakness is if one volatile person can have a large hand in things.

Mainly I am looking for perspective I can trust, which can only come from those well-acquainted with _____'s flaws.

As an aside... for the last months, I have been something of a _____. I used it as a place where I could manifest a lot of interesting emotions, from wherever they were born in me. But now I am back, interested if _____ can become a sharper information source, or if I should just leave the damn thing.

I don't really read Kuro5hin except when it first started (before it became another VA Lignux site), but I still somehow feel that I am qualified to respond to your post.

Your answer: It is a democracy, and democracies produce mediocrity.

Some of the individuals that make up such a forum may be creative and interesting. Sometimes they may even post interesting things in their diaries. But the stories themselves are subject to mob rule aka groupthink.

No good or bold ideas will ever come out of a democracy.

Compare this to a well-run dictatorship, like Adequacy. "The people" have no say in what stories appear on the front page. The entire editorial group is shrouded in KGB-esque mystery. Yet, for the most part, the content is of extraordinary quality.

On the other hand, even the most passive of the Kuro5hinites recognize the life-sucking boredom which characterises K5's articles.

You may ask, "Are dictatorships always the best choice?"

Absolutely not. If they are not well-run then they are the worst choice. Look at the abysmal pit of Slashdot. I get depressed just thinking about that place! The perfect example of a poorly run dictatorship.

I left K5 about 9 months ago (well, I checked back shortly after 9/11). It was fun for awhile, but eventually I got sick of the whole "We are so smart and intellectual, and open-minded. Let's talk about how smart and intellectual and open-minded we are. Let's write a constitution." and other such bullcrap.

The only problem with K5 are the retarded people who frequent it. On the idiocy scale, I would put it just below Slashdot.

and adequacy ain't all that. At worst, the faults of each site lie in their leanings. Adequacy errs far too much on the side of form, resulting in pristine articles devoid of value except in some velveeta quasicynical pomo-type sense. Kuro5hin errs on the side of function, churning out mostly workmanlike, earnest prose that is sometimes quite informative, but lacks gracefulness. A few k5 articles achieve both, but that's been more rare as the number of users has increased and more crap gets voted up. It's a classic conundrum. Too many cooks will dilute any soup. From the looks of things, there is even some possibility adequacy's already at that point. But who knows what the next months will bring.
