 Guilt about shareware.

From the first time I heard the term "share-ware," I was interested. Now, many of my favorite programs are shareware, but I can't bring myself to register.

I am addicted to Hot Deals and cannot help myself.
See you later
I've done everything I can to weasel out of shareware terms. I'm awfully guilty about it because I've gotten so much value out of these programs, but I'm too damned tight to part with any money.

Footnote: Actually I did register one program, called "Neverlock," back in the early 1990's in order to copy other games. :)

Anyhow, I have no money now, still in school, but I plan someday to be a great benefactor of shareware writers.

That's my confession.

Who needs shareware? (5.00 / 1) (#1)
by kwench on Wed Oct 31st, 2001 at 01:11:28 PM PST
Actually, I think that you can do pretty well without a single piece of shareware on your computer.

Just learn some programming language like I did!
Today, I'm coding most of the tools I need by myself!

For example a high-quality strategy game? No problem, here it comes (GW-BASIC):

100 print "Welcome to Guess my Number!"
110 a=rnd(500)
120 print "Enter a number between 0 and 500!"
130 input a$
140 b=int(a$)
150 if a>b then goto 200
160 if a<b then goto 250
170 print "Yes! You have guessed my number!"
180 end
200 print "No, my number is larger!"
210 goto 120
250 print "No, my number is smaller!"
260 goto 120

There are worse programmings languages one could learn... worse than perl (yes! there are!)...

... worse than perl ...

Not possible. Simply not possible. Only people who have reached the stage of injecting drugs into their eyeballs would program Pearl.

That means you program pearl, right?

Obviously not since he can't even spell it right.

It's Perl not PERL or Pearl.

If the high point in your life was sitting infront of a computer in a dark room then I truly pity you.

Personally my favorite times were playing soccer with friends all afternoon.

Or building forts out of drift wood.

Or swimming in the river and eatting fresh pineapple slices afterwards.

"High point"? (none / 0) (#9)

Who said anything about a "high point"? Actually, more like "low point", which is why I remember it so vividly. Much more vividly, in fact, than the typical childhood stuff. (Like climbing trees or swimming in rivers or whatnot.)

Fellow shareware whore (none / 0) (#7)

I got addicted to the stuff once. It wasn't pretty. I couldn't bring myself to download the crackz, so I reinstalled Windows® every 30 days to get past the time limits. I told myself that it was just a temporary arrangement until I got the cash. That's how I rationalized it, but in my heart, I knew it was a lie. It took me a long time to quit, but I'm better now. Really, I am.
