I am the secular humanist media conspiracy!
I'm so inadequate.
I graduated college with a major in Russian (short explanation: I liked the classes best) and took a lot of Computer Science classes. After I got out of school plenty of places would look at my resume and bring me in for an interview. Then they wouldn't call me back. I tried to explain to them how learning languages is a talent transferrable between artificial and spoken languages. Oh well, I'll show them. 8) I doubt any of you care, but this whole diary thing is liberating.

That seems like a dubious argument at best.

But it is creative and worth a try. I think it would make a good line of argument; I'd like to be a fly on the wall as he argues with some bearded CS professor.

Professor: Come in! Explain to me why you think you merit a place in my course?
HB: I can speak Russian, this will allow me to learn Visual Basic in no time.
Professor: I seeee. How will this happen?
HB: Well, I find if I immerse my self among speakers of a language, I pick it up in no time. The best way, of course, is to sleep with a girl who speaks your target language, then you pick up the pillow talk. I'd simply sleep with female CS students and speak only in Visual Basic, using my 'Visual Basic Phrasebook' when caught short. I'd be fluent rapidly, and able to ask for directions and order meals in Visual Basic, which is, I understand, freshman standard.
Professor: Welcome aboard!
HB: Great!

that's funny shit. Too bad I don't know any native Visual Basic speakers. The line of reasoning is more along the lines of skillset overlapping. Syntax is syntax whether it be artificial or natural language. I know Java too so my Russian major was actually a backup selling point.

Quick question, as I don't speak Java. Where do the stem accents go in second-conjugation Java verbs?

Seriously, I wish I had fluent Russian. I would give major bodily organs for that.

Have your testicles removed and send them to Madame DuQuesne on Lautreamont Street in New Orleans along with a simple note explaining your need to learn fluent, idiomatic Russian with no effort. Favorable results will follow.

is this the Orthodox methodology?

I was really thinking along the lines of those loser organs. What can I get for a spleen? How about a gallbaldder?

One word: Esperanto.

A bit of advice: don't try to be cheap with the loa. It's not healthy.
