THE QUESTION
The question is: Why not legalize marijuana?
Please everyone leave comments on why you think marijuana should not be legalized. Now i'm sure there are a few of you out there that think it should be legalized. But I want to know what your arguments are for not legalizing it. Bring it! I love to aruge!

i think everything should be legalized. if someone wants to fucking die from a speedball, then goddamn darwin tells us they should be allowed to do it. it's the only way to get rid of the leeches of society without setting up a dictatorship and doing it manually.

I don't understand the genetics of addiction too well (I don't think it's well understood at all), but I know it is more complicated than just an "addict gene."

But regardless, what makes you think people with this "addict gene" will die out? At first glance, addicts seem to be reproducing at a faster rate than the general population.

I don't see a predisposition to addiction killing of the drug problem any time soon.

Marijuana should not be legalized. Keeping things forbidden ensure strength and discipline in our great country. It would be a very bad example for our weak youth if something forbidden would suddenly become allowed. The fact that there is not one reasonable motive to prohibit marijuana must not change our mind. Forbidden things are forbidden things. You should learn to obey, even if you don't understand the motives or if there is no motive at all.

So being a responsible father wanting to protect his children makes *me* a narrow-minded pervert ?

Where would our great country be if all weird behaviours were not only allowed, but encouraged by ultra-liberals like you. Our last president was this kind of pervert and look where it brought our country, being laught at by the rest of the world.

At least our president now knows how to have the world respect the United States of America. Everyone knows now we will fight for respect and going to war if we need to.

Why is tobacco still legal? I guess we learned from Prohibition that outlawing tobacco would be impractical, at best.

I think the best reason for keeping marijuana illegal is that we have too many legal recreational drugs as it is.

We have alcohol. I don't think that drunks realize how ridiculous and dangerous they seem to the rest of the population. It's bad for the brain, and bad for the liver.

We have tobacco. It's an all around bad idea: addiction, cancer, heart disease, and second-hand smoke for the kiddies. I've never smoked, but it can't be all that great of a buzz if you can still operate heavy machinery. It doesn't seem worth it.

We have caffeine. This is the only recreational drug I use. I probably use it too much, and I have had problems with it in the past. It is shocking just how many people depend on this drug for normal function.

Now why do we need more recreational drugs? To overburden our health system with more problems? To cause more traffic accidents?

Are coffee breaks and smoke breaks not enough for you people? Must we have pot breaks too? It will only lead to a drop in worker efficiency, as another 15 minutes is taken out of the American work day.

Do you have vodka breaks at work? Beer breaks? You're forgetting that cannabis is actually quite intoxicating.
Having a break to smoke a wee number would probably have quite a severe effect on productivity, possibly about as much as having a break to drink a couple of cans of beer.
Of course, American beer is a lot weaker than in the UK, and is often in smaller cans. Bear this in mind when considering the effects of a couple of cans of beer while working.
Some of us who run large computer systems pretty much have carte blanche to chill out in the server rooms with a cold one though. If you own the company, no-one can whinge about what you do...

Not everybody works in the "server room."

I knew several people that would have a beer or two at lunch.

I have never worked in a big-city high-rise job, but those guys in 3-piece suits in the movies often have a minibar in their offices, and have some scotch as they discuss business.

I have a friend who is a teacher. She has a coworker that keeps a bottle of Vodka in her desk. "It helps her get through the rough days."

When the house behind mine was being built, the construction workers would take breaks to pass around a joint. (I doubt 5 guys were sitting around sharing a tobacco cigarette)

The "vodka break" and the "cannabis break" might not be as common as the coffee break, and definitely don't have the same social standing, but they happen.
