What should I do about my twin teenage nieces? They're smart, good looking kids, but they're stuck in a piss-poor school system with parents that don't value education. As a result, they're school performance is declining, they're nto taking hard classes, and I wonder what kind of future they will have.

I have another teenage niece jsut a few months younger, and she's doing great. She's working hard to get a soccer or lacrosse scholarship, acing her Regents tests, and may well be a neonatalogist some day. Her parents really push her, and I think they're viewpoint has merit.

As far as the twins, I'm not sure what more I can do. I promised to tutor the one in algebra and geometry (her mom asked if I knew math well, uh-huh. dffyQ well if you must know). I try to fire up their interests in computers and networking. I ask them about school and stuff.

Any other ideas?

hard to give advice if we don't know what makes them tick, turns their wheels, etc.

are they artsy? imaginative? clinical? inquisitive? monotanous? goofy? what?

I am not who you think I am.

Homeschooling? (5.00 / 2) (#2)

Is it possible that you can homeschool them, or at least help them with their homework and tutior them?

Without their parents' permissions, I doubt they can be put into another school. I think many teenagers are stuck in a rutt this way, not just teenage girls.

Find out what the twin's interests are, and then teach them on that. If they are not interested in computers and networking and stuff like that, you may be wasting your time. They could be artists, or scientists, or doctors, or lawyers, or whatever they set their minds to. I am not a mind-reader, so you are going to have to ask them the right questions to figure out what their interests are and how to teach them. I am sure that their mom and dad will let you babysit them sometimes and tuitor them while babysitting.
