When I first came here I thought this place was interesting....

 Comments:

but when I read on I realised that this site is just like all others like it, those who are eager to "show off" their alledged opinions seem to have little knowledge about what they write about (usually in quite some length). They seem to be misinformed, full of prejudices about everything and my oh my, if they are criticised they only show their rude side and say that by that they are being intelligent and openminded.

So my decision is easy, I will at the most visit this site once a month like others like it just to see if there might be some evidence of mature conversations or topics where people might actually be able to handle just a hint of opposite opinion.

Hey! (2.00 / 2) (#2)
by Blue Aardvark House on Thu Jan 3rd, 2002 at 09:17:02 AM PST
That was a pretty immature response. I expect more from long-time posters in a site subtitled "News for Grown-Ups".

At least allow people to share their opinions, especially in journals. This entry seemed fairly intelligent and well-written.

I thought that's what journals were for.

It's all about the context, d00d. (5.00 / 1) (#3)

If you want intellectual masturbation for the sake of intellectual masturbation, I advise you to just leave and join your liberalist hideout for sexual deviancy.

Sometimes flippancy is exactly what is needed; the ability to juggle appropriately between stupidity and wisdom is what separates true enlightened discourse from the amateurs. (I'm not tooting my horn here, rather simply stating a fact of life.)

You completely missed my point. First off, I have no plans on leaving. I enjoy the occasional read on here and I have no problem with the articles, etc. It's not like he was leaving completely, just disappointed with the content and presentation on the site. You can'te everyone.

I simply thought your response was immature and childish, not flippant. Even if I didn't see the alleged "flippancy" of your response, I'm still capable of intelligent discourse. Do not judge me on the basis of that.

I'll explain slowly. (5.00 / 1) (#7)
by tkatchev on Thu Jan 3rd, 2002 at 11:08:02 AM PST
Since you seem to lack a certain flair in the area of reading comprehension, to put it mildly, I'll explain my point in the most simple of words.

Sometimes "intelligent discourse" should not be used. Sometimes, stupid discourse is more useful for making a point. The ability to chose between intelligent and stupid discourse is difficult. An ability like that is a mark of a very talented speaker. Somebody who only speaks "intelligent discourse" all the time is usually a bad speaker. How you make a point depends very much on the context of the discussion. Somebody who speaks in the same way all the time is coming across as an idiot.

I hope I made my point clear, because I can't "dumb-down" my post any more. If you still don't understand, ask somebody more adequate to interpret -- maybe they'll have more luck than me.

Don't talk down to me! (2.50 / 2) (#9)
by Blue Aardvark House on Thu Jan 3rd, 2002 at 11:16:30 AM PST
Your response would have been more appropriate for someone who simply wrote "This site sucks and all who post here are lusers".

Save your pitiful tripe for Slashdot. Or, as you want me to speak, Shut your cakehole, before I shove my foot in it!! I don't give a blazing fuck about what you think! Dumbshit.

Yes? (5.00 / 1) (#10)
by tkatchev on Thu Jan 3rd, 2002 at 11:24:52 AM PST
Your point? That I suck? I already know that; you aren't the first, nor the second, nor the third person to talk dirty to me.

By the way, what happened to "intellectual discourse"? From a man of your intellectual worth, I would have expected a blithingly point-for-point explanation (with copious references) of the fact of my massive suckage. Do you have something you want to say, blazingly intellectual self-worth aside?

I'm still waiting for you to make that important point everyone is wating for.

Check. Now your turn.

Right over yer head! (2.00 / 2) (#11)
by Blue Aardvark House on Thu Jan 3rd, 2002 at 11:37:51 AM PST
I dumbed down my post, just for you. But you, with your head in the clouds failed to see it, o great master. You failed to recognize your own patronizing technique. And fail to recognize and accept that there are dissenting points of view. That's part of great discourse too. You really can't go through life with tunnel vision.

You're right. You really do suck. I have no more to say to you.

Checkmate.

What makes you think that? (3.00 / 2) (#12)
by tkatchev on Thu Jan 3rd, 2002 at 12:55:34 PM PST
It was pretty obvious. Which is why I littered my reply with copious tongue-in-cheek self-references.

You lose, d00d; you are totally derivative, your jokes suck.

And yes, I know that there are dissenting points of view; unlike you, though, I have the balls to admit to myself that, for me personally, they are all inferiour. Unlike you liberalists, I realize that a person is more than just a reality-processing machine.

Those are some harsh words for a small, unwashed man like yourself. If you ask anybody on this fair site with a brain (i.e. most everybody but youself) you will quickly realise ttkatchev is perhaps one of the most intelligent speakers on this noble site. Perhaps you need a vacation to a far away beach and surround yourself in naked women.

Good day to you "Blue Aardvark House" sir.

You didn't read it, did you (1.00 / 1) (#19)
by Blue Aardvark House on Fri Jan 4th, 2002 at 01:08:44 PM PST
He asked for it in the previous post.

And if you look at the comment ratings, it's clear that I have won.

He may be intelligent, but he's also an arrogant gas-baron.

Just as you are, I'm entitled to my opinion, too.

Uh-huh (5.00 / 1) (#20)
by hauntedattics on Fri Jan 4th, 2002 at 01:22:25 PM PST
Actually, dear, some of us don't rate comments, because we prefer to read them and engage in intelligent discourse, not compete in some sort of popularity contest. No one's disputing your right to your own opinion in any case.

And get used to tkatchev. He's been around awhile and often has interesting, if provocative, things to say.

I can tollerate his rantings (none / 0) (#22)
by error27 on Sat Jan 5th, 2002 at 04:07:56 AM PST
but I wouldn't go so far as to call them interesting.

I think there was one time where I gave him a +5 rating but that was because something he said was unintentionally funny.

I usually leave tkatchev alone. (none / 0) (#23)

I've rated all of his comments in this thread, though, in order to make Blue Ardvaark look stupid. More stupid, I mean.

Modstorming (none / 0) (#24)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Jan 7th, 2002 at 10:44:22 AM PST
sucks, d00d!
<p>
It's also brainless. Why didn't you repsond to him instead?

Um, did you read the whole thread? (none / 0) (#25)
by RobotSlave on Tue Jan 8th, 2002 at 01:21:13 PM PST
I'm not sure what this "modstorming" you refer to is all about, but I'm pretty sure I'm not doing it. I rated all the comments in the thread. Is that a "modstorm?" I normally wouldn't bother with ratings at all, but, as I'm sure you noticed, Blue Aardvark appealed to the ratings, and claimed to have "won" the argument, based on those ratings. If a single person can reverse the "verdict" of the ratings in such a situation, then it begs to be done, if only to prove a point.

That I have been tricked into explaining this laboriously and at length makes the whole thing much less satisfying, but I'd do it again if the opportunity presented itself.

I think you left something out. (5.00 / 2) (#6)
by RobotSlave on Thu Jan 3rd, 2002 at 11:04:51 AM PST
Your observations seem all right, as far as they go, but I think they need a conclusion. It looks as though you simply forgot to add the following:

"...and rather than departing in a clean and civilised manner, I will leave whinging little diary entries lying about like mouse droppings. I feel as though there is something important in the content of this site that I am missing, but since I am too stupid and biased to read the viewpoints presented with an open mind and learn from them, I will instead accuse their authors of the faults that I know in my heart are my own. Furthermore, I will make this accusation in public, as an utterly transparent cry for help, because I am too ashamed to ask for assistance directly."

Sorry to disappoint but I have to say that I agree here, "tkatchev" is the one here behaving irratically and without reason. That's all I have to say!

Anyway, I'll probably never visit this site again so, over-and-out.

the return of jsm to this pixel salon.

I suspect it's a little like waiting for summer to arrive in the Pacific Northwest; one never knows when or even if it might happen, but the joy realized when that sunshine finally does appear is absolute and undeniable.

I know I'll likely pay for this, but I'll post it anyway: for him, I might just reconsider my stance on breeding. Yum!
