Ah those were the days. Let me take you back, a convicted criminal stands before his former associates confesses to his crimes against them and is summarily executed.

What could America need more right now? The unity this type of activity brings to the community is unparalleled.
Men, women, children, Fathers, Mothers, Son & Daughters, all witnessing society's judgment on wrongdoing.
There is no question that bad deeds will go unpunished. There is no technical difficulties with the trial.
Your priest, baker, butcher, cooper, and farrier all stand as witnesses alongside with the seamstress, washer woman and maid.
A moment is taken to reflect on what it means to be a part of the community and how this ungrateful person has disrupted the balance that keeps everyone safe and happy.

...blow "Survivor" and every other kind of so-called "reality" they ever thought of right out of the water. Right out of the fucking water, no contest.

Man, wouldn't that be a thing to behold? Just try to imagine the ratings it would get. Try! I can. I can totally imagine. Can you?

I don't advocate torture (none / 0) (#3)
by John Wainright on Sun Mar 10th, 2002 at 10:09:50 PM PST
Simply because as a society we are above that.
However it would be nice to inflict the exact same kind of damage on a criminal that he/she inflicted upon their victim.
Some capital punishments are thought of as torture. Perhaps they are in a way.
I read a short story once entitled "Macs".
The premise was the the body of Timothy McViegh was cloned many times so that the families of his victims each had the oppurtunity to mete justice in their own way. Chilling thoughts.
I would hate to see us degenerate into roving mobs seeking out blood. But at the same time there is no sense in keeping someone around who commits these kinds of acts.
Life without parole would seem more torture than execution.
If you have no chance of leaving prison what good are you as a person?

The problem with that.. (none / 0) (#4)

Simply cloning a person doesnt recreate that person.
Genes arent everything.

Yea you would have a group of people who looked like timothy mcveigh and acted slightly like timothy mcveigh but not people who thought like timothy mcveigh.

Couldnt timothy mcveigh's thoughts and beliefs be put down to his experience with the military and the influence of his associates in crime? Ie it was his environment that influenced his actions not his genes.

The methods in your poll are torture (none / 0) (#5)
by jvance on Mon Mar 11th, 2002 at 05:23:41 PM PST
Beheading isn't a clean death. The brain continues to live until it metabolizes what's left of the oxygen. Hanging certainly isn't clean. Drawing and quartering is ripping someone apart alive. Many of the execution methods in the link I provided fit right in.

I was disappointed that my favorite method wasn't included, though. The Mujahedin had a unique method of dealing with Soviet helicopter pilots. They'd score their body from neck to foot with shallow cuts, then lock them into a barrel of brine from the neck down and leave them to die. Pickled pilot.

Although Lethal injection isn't very torturous.
If done propery the person is put to sleep before the poison is injected.
As far as your favorite method is concerned, is there a name for this act?

Actually, I think you can kill someone just by giving them hundreds of shallow cuts, so the barrel of brine must just be a way of making it more excruciating.

Nice artistic touch. We're so creative when it comes to this kind of crap.

I saw this on some History channel special or somesuch.

I don't think the cuts themselves were sufficient to kill. They were to facilitate contact between the brine and the pilot's flesh. Osmosis, over a number of days, did the rest. I think the Afghans came up with this as a retaliation for some of the Soviet practices, like pouring diesel fuel down a village well and igniting it with a lit villager.

On a completely unrelated note, I need to check out the snack room and see if there's any beef jerky left.

Like I said, we're so creative when it comes to this kind of stuff.

*Sigh*
