I quit smoking two months ago. I thought it was supposed to be hard? Then again, let's see if I'm still not smoking after a year.

I thought it was supposed to be hard? [peering down at crotch]

There are numerous treatments available for chronic erectile dysfunction; the symptoms you describe are common, and there is hope.

I'm sure I speak for most of the members of this site when I say that we wish you well, and trust that you will be successful in overcoming this scourge of our society.

All your research has already been done for you.

It turns out that if you try to raise the level of obscenity in a public forum to infinity, you eventually end up with pure ascii noise.

Suck down a pack a day for 15 years and let me know how trying to quit goes for you.

I'm not impressed either. (none / 0) (#4)

To get to 15 years, you would have had to pass through the 5 year mark, which is where I just quit. It's hardly my fault that you don't have my good sense.

Honestly though, I find it hard to believe that if you're still at a pack a day after fifteen years (and not 2 packs or 3 packs) that it can be significantly worse than a pack a day after 5 years.

But I'm not going to try it out to prove you wrong.

I applaud you. You have just taken to the second most important step possible (after never smoking in the first place) towards avoiding an unnaturally early demise.

I wish you luck on keeping off the tobbacky.

The key to a healthy life is in staying slim by means of creative stress management.

Even cows need a little bit of "shock therapy" once in a while.

But I would imagine even that would be better than the not-so-wacky weed.

I quit last week. (none / 0) (#8)

I find the following to be proof of a physical addiction:

When I do not have a patch on which gives my nicotine I am very grumpy, have mean thoughts about other people and little self control (sorry if you have been a victim.) Further, when I am bored I think about smoking.

With the patch on I am relaxed and have more self control. When I am bored I think about doing something else.

Did you quit cold turkey?

Yes, I did quit cold turkey. I actually find it's easier to stay quit when I still have the physical cravings. The first week or two is simple for me, you've got the bad effects of smoking staring you in the face. You're coughing up all kinds of crap, you've got a headache, you can't concentrate and you have this deep need for a disgusting, nasty cigarette.

It's the weeks and months that follow, where you've got just a vague yearning for a harmless cigarette, in which it's hard to stay on track. Especially when you go to a show or out to a bar with friends who are smoking. But, from earlier attempts at stopping I learned that I can't smoke just one cigarette here and there. I don't work that way.

I had just purchased a car and decided to quit and make a no smoking rule in the car, since that's where much of my smoking happened. I think it's helped.

I realize though that some people need the patch or Zyban. I have a friend who absolutely can not quit cold turkey. When he tries to quit smoking he starts shaking and having horrible physical withdrawl. I was with him once when we tried to quit together and he was unable to eat the soup he had purchased for lunch because he was shaking so much his spoon was empty by the time it reached his mouth.

Mmmm...just telling these stories reminds me why I quit.
