A true oxymoron would be something like "freezer burn."

Just because you America-hating draft-dodging hippie types keep repeatedly saying "military intelligence" is an oxymoron, it doesn't make it so. Maybe you should take a moment to consider all intelligence that goes into making the US Army the most powerful army in the world.

How about "Microsoft Works"? Or "Outlook Express"? What about "Holy War"?

It's more of a contradiction in terms, but how about the placement of "adequacy.org" and "news" anywhere in the same sentance?

First off, where in the hell did I say anything about the US Army in my post? Other countries out there do have military forces. You, being an American citizen, should know- your boys sure do like bombing the hell out of them, allies or not.

But I agree- the US Army is the most powerful army in the world. But power doesn't necessarily go hand in hand with intelligence.

Think about this for a moment. The US Army is the most powerful army in the world because it has better funding, better equipment, and fields a much larger force in peacetime than any other nation in the world. The US Army is not superior because they field better strategians and tacticians, nor because the troops are inherently smarter or better trained than other nations; no, only numbers and logistics favor the Americans. Intelligence does not play a role here.

I've met many current and ex-members of the American military, and they were all dumb as the proverbial box of rocks. Not an intelligent one in the bunch.

Here's a hint for you: "Well-funded" does not necessarily mean "stupid" or "lucky". And I believe that the PRC's army is bigger than the U.S.'s.

Still hung up on America? I used the term "military intelligence" as a blanket term for any military of any country.

I have to concur one point, though. I've met many an American soldier through my travels and I must agree that they are all indeed as dumb as the "proverbial box of rocks."

And yes, well-funded does not necessarily mean stupid or lucky. But neither does it mean "intelligence." I stand by my point- you do not need intelligence to maintain the "most powerful army in the world" as long as you have some jackass willing to throw more money at it.

Thank you for pointing out the PRC bit. I was incorrect on that point. China does actually field more men than the US. However, the US (who is constantly prepared to fight a war on three separate fronts) still puts out a pretty hefty number of troops, and they are all much better equipped than any Chinese soldier. Not to mention the insane amount of hardware that the US military fields, and the hardware that they keep tucked away in their collective attics for future use.

I still say "military intelligence" = oxymoron.

You appear to be a Frenchman. The next time the Germans are shelling your cities into crumbs be sure that you don't involve the US Military in any way. It should put your mind at ease that you are well advanced of those Germans with regard to intelligence, and that you won't have to sully you soil with hoardes of American fighting men.

By the way, the term you seek is 'US Military' not 'US Army'. The Army is a branch of the military rather than the entire thing. A Marine would be incensed over this, being a sailor I am merely amused by your ignorance.

Regardless, there is no doubt that there are US soldiers out there who possess below average intelligence. This only serves to reinforce the brilliance of the military machine that the United States has devised. It can take the dimmest bulbs and train them to be the world's best fighting men, able to carry out enormously complex operations, or at least some small portion thereof, in the most efficient, accurate, and effective manner the world has ever seen. On the other hand, there are also very intelligent members of our military (not to be self aggrandizing, but Special Forces is full of them).

There are many other armies across the globe that use a similar scheme, although they are obviously inferior. Despite that, military thinking in general is most certainly intelligent, and it is your narrow field of view that causes you to feel otherwise.

June 3, 1940 would be the most famous date. That is when the first serious bombing of Paris by Germany began during WWII. Also read up on the Dunkirk evacuation.

There is a famous photo of Adolph Hitler and one or another of his henchmen standing within a few hundred yards of your Eiffel Tower after his army took control of the city.

While the majority of the destruction in WWII came via Luftwaffe bombers, which can't rightly be called shelling, the Germans did use a considerable amount of artillery in sacking the city.

Also see The First Battle of the Marne, as well as the March Offensive, both during WWI.

These situations give rise to jokes such as "The streets of France are lined with trees because the German Army likes to march in the shade." and "Welcome to France, summer home of the German Army.", both of which I heard repeatedly during the short time I spent in France.

...came about due to allied shelling and bombing.

Rouen lost 40-50% of it buildings due to American bombing. Le Harve suffered heavy damage, Saint-Nazaire was almost completely destroyed, and so it goes on, city after city, town after town.
