Thy Kingdom come
Thy will be done
On Earth as it is in Heaven
Give us this day our daily bread
Forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from Evil
For thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory
For ever and ever.

Amen.

I am an atheist, but I went through a year at a Catholic school, St Patrick's College, and I can say for sure that this stuff about kingdoms, power and glory is NOT a part of the Lord's Prayer.

One Lord, many prayers (5.00 / 2) (#2)
by Ernest Bludger on Thu Jul 18th, 2002 at 09:43:34 PM PST
Despite the fact that there is only one Lord, there appear to be many prayers for Him.

You must have been to a school that used the radio edit of T.L.P. I recall from my schooldays the 12" version that sevenypercent has drawn our attention to.

I know that some newer remixes try to adopt more (so-called) 'modern' language; e.g., replacing 'trespasses' with 'sins' etc. I care not for this meddling with a perfectly fine prayer.

If you're having trouble reading it, either install the Athena Unicode font, or change the font you use to MS's Palatino Linotype.

Act of Congress (none / 0) (#5)
by Anonymous Reader on Fri Jul 19th, 2002 at 09:48:13 AM PST
The kingdom/power/glory lines were added by an Act of Congress in the 1950's in order to tick off the Russians.

That act also added the words "under God" to the Pledge of Allegiance, and "by their Creator" to the Declaration of Independence.

I guess we should look at getting them changed back...those phrases worked when America was fighting atheists. But now that we're fighting hardcore theocrats, we need to switch back to a more secular stance if we want them to be properly ticked-off.

Stop repeating yourself. Catholics are not Christians and should not be treated as such. Their perversions of Scripture are horrid and malevolent and should probably be made illegal.

Obviously you were too busy sucking off Father McDoyle to pay too much attention to the words of the Lord's Prayer. You are hereby instructed to repent, perform twenty hail Mary's, and burn your child pornography.

Obviously you never went to mass (none / 0) (#9)

During mass, the congregation says the bulk of the prayer. Then at the end the priest closes it with "For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours, now and forever."

I guess the protestants decided everybody can say that last line.
