Why can't the US and UK just come out and say that this war is a war on Islam?

They are both mostly Christian countries. Obviously, from the list of the top 22 wanted terrorists (who are all Arab Muslims) the sole focus of the war on terrorism is on Islamic terrorists. And if that's going to be expanded to Iraq and other countries we don't like, why not just call it a war on Arabs or Muslims? Why do we have to be all PC about it?

That's quite a thesis (none / 0) (#3)
by Adam Rightmann on Wed Oct 10th, 2001 at 12:21:47 PM PST
Very controversial, especially if you were to flesh it out and perhaps submit it to a controversial web site. For the record, I think a wholesale holocaust of Muslims is wrong, especialy if you don't give them ample time to convert.

The modern conversion (none / 0) (#6)

These ideas you have about conversion would be quite applicable even a century anf a half ago, when a good catholic soldier could force the heretical protestant to convert at swordpoint, but these methods are no longer open to us. It is very hard to force people to convert at missilepoint, as missiles lack that personal touch. The only solution is to burn them free of their sins.

swordpoint works for them too (none / 0) (#8)

Historically the Islamist peoples are also guilty of conversion at swordpoint - shit happens on both sides- however - both are guilty of keeping women as slaves - and treating women as less than a camel- what annoys me most about this behaviour re women is that if it had been perpetrated against blacks or other ethnice minorities it would have been pounced on from a greta height by all the world- it appears that women don't matter except when |Blair and Bush wish to win votes from a sound bite.
Picture it- a black man made to live totaly covered because his body offends white men - not allowed to receive education because it might give him ideas and of course it is not his role- made to beg on the streets when his master dies because he is not permitted to get a job - not permitted to vote- to have a say in the way the country is run- stoned and /or shot if he dares to show his face in public or read a bok - now replace the image with a woman- any woman and you have the way women are treated by these people- thats enough reason for me to go to war with them

it's not a war on islam (4.00 / 2) (#4)
by Anonymous Reader on Wed Oct 10th, 2001 at 01:59:02 PM PST
It's an attempt to mitigate China's promising economic influence and participation in a very strategic and natural gas rich region of the world which is hungering and poised for development. China signed a trade agreement with Afghanistan shortly after 9/11, and America's business and political leadership must be thinking that if they dont establish some sort of hegemony in the -stan region, pipelines and cash will flow east instead of west. Why else are they working to impose friendlier rule in Afghanistan? Afghanistan didnt do dick to the WTC.

Crusade? (4.00 / 2) (#5)
by Hagbard Celine on Wed Oct 10th, 2001 at 09:24:21 PM PST

The map is not the territory. You can't have a war against a religion. George Bush isn't a fucking crusader. He doesn't have enough spine for that. This is a war against fundamentalists of the islamic type. A group of Islamic fundamentalists took control of Afghanistan after we helped them (Yup, the US trained bin Laden and his buddies, dumb fucking idea) defeat the Soviets. I still haven't seen proof that it was Bin Laden but the Taliban have to go. It's the equivalent of a nation-state run by the people who bomb abortion clinics to "save lives". Sure, the normal Afghan is a good person and doesn't deserve to get bombed for what a few fundamentalist pricks did to piss off the most powerful (and arrogant) nation on earth, but the Taliban needs to be removed for the safety of the rest of the world, including the moderate Muslim states around it.

Stop the silliness.

well i dont care what ... religion these people are- if they had been buddhists i think I would support going after them- it desnt matter what religion you are when you drive two panes into tower blocks and kil thousands of people- stop making it more than it is- it just happens that the worst terrorists in the world today are Islamic extremists- yesterday they were IRA tomorrow they might be another religion- who cares as long as they are stopped - I dont :)
