the point is that individualism and the primacy of virtue made modern, areligious humanism not only necessary but historically inevitable, given scientific discoveries' implicit refutations of revealed history. Now, religion must stand aside lest it destroy the very humanism it made possible, leaving us all under the Taliban, or their moral, cultural equivalent.

he's saying that he's a communist.

Basically, he just gave a three-sentence rehash of the Marxist philosophy of "atheistic materialism" and "scientific communism".
