Not the type of story they want to see, and I am told I should seek medical advice.

Yet another day in the life of Orion Blastar, Space Pirate, and depressed suicidal alright guy?
The King of the Patato-People has got me down!
It was about 5-HTP and if it is able to treat depression. I wasn't sure if it was right to use this to help in my depression, I'll discuss this with my doctor tomorrow.

For those that have been reading my K5 diaries, you know how I am depressed and sometimes suicidal. You most likely also have read why or the things that bother me. Many understand or have gone through almost the same things. It is really hard to function when your brain is malfunctioning most of the time. So my apologies to anyone I've offended, I didn't really mean to offend. I am so sorry about it. I wanted to set things right. Anyway enough for now.

Is this 5-HTP over-the-counter? (5.00 / 1) (#1)

If so, I would avoid it. A good psychiatrist can work wonders. I've suffered the same problems and more and the medication they put me on cleared it up within a month and I've felt perfectly normal, with only a few relapses which required some adjustments to my meds, ever since. And no real side-effects.

You'd be amazed what they can do with the medicines they have nowadays. Don't make the mistake of thinking you can fix it yourself. Brain chemistry is complex.

Not sure, but I've been treated for 27 years now (none / 0) (#3)

with hardly any signs of improvement. Tomorrow they change my mediciation yet again. I just hope I don't end up a drugged out zombie again like I did ten yearsa ago. On an antidepressant that makes me so spaced out that I don't worry about being depressed because I'll be too busy sleeping and passing out. Which is a change from the current antidepressant medicine that makes me really really sick.

Sometimes I feel like I'll be better off dead than on the medicine. If there are altenratives to the medicine I want to hear about them. This 5-HTP sounded good to me, but I wanted to learn more about it before I actually took any. It sounded like over the counter stuff to me. Natrual herbs and whatnot.

Yes, over the counter... (5.00 / 1) (#5)

5-HTP is available without a perscription. However it's not really an herbal medicine or what I would really call a drug. You were right when you said it's a precursor, and I think that's all it does. I'm not sure if it even directly interacts with your brain chemistry besides that.

However, if you're taking antidepressants already, you should absolutely discuss it with your doctor first, and probably even if you weren't.

I've never really thought of 5-htp as an antidepressant though, and I'm sure if it would work as a supplement to one they would prescribe it if it were really necessary.

The primary use of 5-HTP I've seen is actually by people who take ecstasy. They would often take things like 5-HTP and a half dozen other chemicals like it a few hours before they dosed. This was based on the belief that since ecstasy is so hard on your brain chemistry, it was a good idea to set yourself up for recovering quickly, or at least reduce the blow.

I have no idea how accurate that belief is though.

Well, there is an effect from what I remember, but how much of that is psychosomatic I'm not sure, and at the prices I wasn't willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

That is an unfortunate political decission (none / 0) (#8)

If you are holding onto a rising balloon you are presented with a difficult political decission - let go while you've still got the chance or hold onto the rope and continue getting higher. That's politics man.

You didn't offend anyone. (5.00 / 1) (#2)

We were just concerned if this is maybe the right place to be asking for advice about this sort of thing - I somehow suspect not. It was nothing to do with the quality of the article, rather it was too personal and not really, ummm, 'appropriate' for a front page article.

Anyway, you can always submit it as a diary entry of course, it seemed like just the thing - and diaries here atm do not lack for feedback as far as I can see.

Anyway, thanks for the submission and sorry about it being rejected :\

♥, bc.

Rejection (none / 0) (#4)

I've gotten used to the concept of rejection, most of what I do gets rejected in real life anyway. I've never gotten a story published on Slashdot or K5 either. Guess I am just not a very good writer?

Try here, here, here or many other sites I'm sure. I did try and avoid ones that are just selling the stuff though, as I'm sure they're keen to give you some.

From a quick glance, it can't hurt to try. But IANAP, so don't take my advice :)
