I'm not sure whether this site is a joke...

I mean, I see all these people here who think that AMD chips (which require exacting, nanometer-by-nanometer spacing for their parts) are soldered together in sweatshops in developing countries; people who think that Science Fiction novels like "Neuromancer" or a book on learning to program called "Programming With Perl" are sinister hacking manuals that will corrupt your soul for all eternity. People who think Noam Chomsky (a Jew for his entire life) practices anti-Semitism, who think that Linux is some sort of Form of subliminal message that is the new face of the KKK. My question is: Do those who post these stories genuinely believe them? Or is this place the largest festering fen of sarcasm on the entire internet, a big joke that everybody plays along with? If the latter, then I'm greatly relieved. But if you're all serious... WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE?

I've always seen the site as taking conservatism to its logical extreme, with amusing results. However, there is a kernel of truth out of which each of these monstrosities grow, and then tha kernel of truth is discussed, sometimes with legitimate results, in the comments.

Also, the official stance is that, in order to help literal geeks, everything should be assumed to be serious except that which is contained within <sarcasm> </sarcasm> tags.

Just keep an open mind, be ready to laugh, and even if this site is serious you can still have some fun with it.

Are you saying that this site isn't serious? That we that post on adequacy.org are taking aspects of different philosophies to their extremes in order to demonstrate the fallacies in their ideas? I pray that you're wrong, or else my entire life has been one worthless, meaningless lie.

But the ever vigilant adequacy editors deleted close to 3000 of them for various reasons connected with the overall quality of your adequacy experience.

Couldn't a sample of the worst be copied to k5 or better yet /. for everyones erudition?

There are two schools of thought on this amongst the adequacy editors. The first group believes that adequacy's unique selling point is the fact that we weed out all the crappy posts, trolls and crapfloods so you don't have to, creating an adequacy experience that is always troll-free and wastes as little of your time as possible. As such, why would we want to dilute the adequacy brand by allowing you to read postings which we have deemed to be inadequate ?

The other school of thought appreciates that some people have more time on their hands ands sees that perhaps some kind of subscription scheme to let interested readers see the crap we have to wade through could provide us with another valuable revenue stream.

The jury is still out. What do you loyal adequacy readers think ? Would you pay $5/month to read the unintelligent crappy boring trolls, crapfloods, boring rants, and postings with abominable spelling and grammar which we editors so meticulously filter out on your behalf ?

there are a boatload and a half things you have absolutely have no clue about.

Learning takes time and effort, unfortunately. Being a liberalist with an inflated self-image is not enough, unfortunately.

Unfortunately I haven't had time to really pin it down. Do some digging into the Canons of the Orthodox Church, for starters. Look at what some Islamic scholars have to say about the relationship of the Christian churches to the affairs of State in Western Europe after the Renaissance. Hell, just do a Google search for Liberalism and Liberalist and actually read some of the articles for content.

I no longer care much whether Ivan is trolling or not. He's presenting an interesting and at least superficially self-consistent viewpoint.

<blockquote>People who think Noam Chomsky (a Jew for his entire life) practices anti-Semitism</blockquote>

No one here has ever said this. The correct term for those such as Mr. Chomsky is "self-hating Jew". Everyone realizes the importance of not making any misleading comments about a sensitive issue such as ethnicity or religion.

Consider some of the articles as ... (none / 0) (#11)
by Ben Reid on Mon Mar 18th, 2002 at 04:29:21 PM PST
... a kind of hypothesis. A work in progress.

You post an article on a particular aspect of society/whatever and watch as people with views on that aspect post messages. If the posts support the article theme (e.g. witness g**k repsonses to l***x articles) then your hypothesis was correct.

but there are people out there who don't agree with your views on life, religion, and technology. And many of them are even (gasp) intelligent!

So why don't you hang out for awhile, read more than you post, and think a bit? You might find that you don't actually hold the keys to knowledge and the universe. And you might find that that's perfectly OK.
