Recently I ventured to post a comment at the notorious troll haven, slash.dot, after an absence of many months, probably over a year. I guess I was just curious if it was as degenerate a place as it used to be.

I'll say! My words only survived a ten or twenty minutes before being attacked by one of the notorious slash.dot trolls, who modded it into oblivion. Even in that short time, no less than FIVE slash.dotters were intrigued enough to want to converse with me further. Had any of them thought my ideas lacked merit, they would have just ignored me, but clearly they sensed an opportunity for a stimulating converstaion. Indeed, the small seed I planted blossomed into a round- table of give and take comparable, I dare say, to Plato's Symposium.

But slash.dot's trolls don't care about conversation, or ideas. It took only ONE of them to decide that my ideas were too dangerous and threatening, in spite of the many who wanted more from me.

It's easy to forget how much evil takes place on the Internet outside of the Olympian country of Adequacy.org

I think I shall post a diary at slash.dot announcing that I am leaving forever, and would like all my previous comments and diaries deleted. I tried, but the trolling at slash.dot is just too much for me.

By the way, I bet none of you knew that I choose my Emily Dickinson poems entirely at random, did you? Emily's like my oracle. She always gives me something insightful for any situation.

I hate that crazy bitch. Could you switch to quoting Ezra Pound in your polls? I also do not like John Coltrane. Thx.

Well, I am sorry, but... (none / 0) (#3)

...Emily Dickinson is far and away my favorite poet. Moreover, a randomly-chosen Dickinson poem has consistently been appropriate for whatever diary I was writing. Maybe I could switch to Wallace Stevens, but certainly not Pound, or anyone else associated with the New Christian movement (Tolkein, CS Lewis, Auden, Eliot, etc.).

That would be highly inappropriate. Not only is is philosophically at odds with what I'm trying to say, it is too vague and muddy. I want a poet that isn't so hard to understand, you know?

How about Black Sabbath lyrics?

Black Sabbath always used the same nursery-rhyme forms that William Blake liked so much. It can be interesting...

that all the slashdot-ers jumped on your comments about Macintosh, and no one said anything about your controversial desktop comments. Of course, I have a Turner picture on my desktop, so what do I know?

Unlike moriveth, I really like your Emily D. poems. Keep it up.

...and no one said anything about your controversial desktop comments.

What's controversial on plain-colored desktop? It conserves memory, it is faster to display on slow machines where it still influences the "feel" of speed, and - last but not least - when controlling the machine over VNC over slow network it's lightning fast in comparison with a picture.

If the machine is actually used for work and not only as a paperweight, there is an application window over the desktop all the time anyway.

Currently in process of removing tongue from cheek. Now excuse me while I pretend to work on my fancy portable paperweight.
