Luis Gonzalez's ninth-inning single dashed the Yankees' championship hopes. Tomorrow, New York will be in mourning--again.

I am shocked and outraged by the selfishness and sheer malice displayed by the Arizona Diamondbacks. Instead of altruistically allowing a dramatic victory for a still-suffering New York, they chose to snatch the glory for themselves. The healing process of New York--and that of the nation as a whole--has received a crushing blow.

In times of trouble, Americans have historically looked to sports for reassurance. The vicarious experience of winning a championship is not unlike that of waging a successful war. Luis Gonzales's bat not only drove in the game-winning run, it struck the morale of the American public--a "home run" for Osama bin Laden.

Whether we be Arizonians or Mets fans, we are all Yankees to Osama bin Laden. And as Americans, we can only abhor the selfish and greedy Arizona players, not content with a NL championship and a healed nation. Luis Gonzales, Curt Schilling, and Randy Johnson hijacked the soaring aircraft of the New York Yankees and sent it crashing into the towering World Trade Center of American morale. They deserve nothing less than the full weight of our nation's opprobrium.

	It's a GAME. New York does NOT need to be coddled by the rest of America. Supported, Yes. Helped, yes. Given whatever they damned well want? No. Sure, it would have been nice if NY won the game. But they didn't. I don't think they deserve to win if they don't have the team to do it, no matter what happened on Sept 11th. It's life back to normal, not give the good life to NY, and FCK the rest of the country*.

	I think you're looking at this too narrowly. It's precisely because it is "only a game" that the Diamondbacks' victory is so hollow. The people of Arizona have nothing to gain from this victory, and neither does America, but what if the Yankees had triumphed? Wouldn't it lift the spirits of New Yorkers, most of whom knew people who died on September 11? Wouldn't it be a feel-good story for the nation and the world? Wouldn't it send a message about the triumph of the American spirit? Life is hardly "back to normal." We're at war--perhaps not the largest-scale operation, but certainly the war with the broadest implications since Vietnam, perhaps WWII. I and many others gave blood and donated money to help out NY in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks. Don't Gonzalez and Johnson have an obligation to do their own small part?

	I think you're right; it's a God damned dirty shame. Legislation is, of course, the answer, especially given that our President is himself a baseballer. Where's the Republican Party when we really need it? Nathan -- Li'l Sis: Yo, that's a real grey area. Even by my lax standards.
