I could go to the doctors but I believe in self-healing. Something so basic shouldnt need anti-biotics - my immune system should do all the work. Still, the coughing is very annoying. So I decided to try and get rid of this symptom. First I tried the honey and lemon natural technique - honey and lemon juice mixed with hot water. It helps the blocked up nose a bit but no effect on the cough. It tastes nice too :) So then I went down the shop and bought some cough medicine. Its designed to loosen phlem, therefore making it easier to cough up. This in turn removes the need to cough. It works a treat but it does mean im dependant on it in the future. The honey and lemon trick doesnt work but it would be nice to be able to produce my own medicine in the future. I was wondering if anyone knew any old recipes for helping colds/coughs or any single item of food which can help.

Colds (4.00 / 1) (#1)
by First Incision on Mon Feb 4th, 2002 at 07:31:51 PM PST
I would have to say you are doing the right thing. The vast majorities of colds are viral, and not be helped by antibiotics in the slightest. There is no cure for the common cold (although there are a few treatments). With the symptoms you described a doctor's visit would most likely be a waste of time and money.

Yes, the hot water therapy is great. Something I like is to boil a pot of water (add some spices if you want) and put a towel over your head and breathe in the steam. It is quite relaxing, even if the effect is short-lived.

Of course, I am also a big believer in the powers of medicine. Particularly, I like stuff with Dextromethorphan. It works wonders for the supression of coughing. NyQuil and Dayquil are good sources of this. A good thing you might get out of a visit to the doctor are some prescription-strength Dextromethorphan pills.

But like almost all things, they have side effects. You will be quite wired and hyper without some sort of depressant (like the types found in NyQuil). Being mentally hyper and fatigued at the same time can be annoying.

If you take enough (say, twelve times the recommended dose) Dextromethorphan, it won't make you hyper. In fact, you'll feel quite, quite relaxed!

You might drink several bottles of NyQuil at once. Did you know that a major ingredient in NyQuil is uses as a sedative and painkiller? It is also a quite common gateway drug for aspiring junkies.

(Tech Warning)
My brother would sometimes have a bottle of Vicks44 (DM without the sedatives of NyQuil). He would use it for all-night videogame sessions. So its use as a gateway drug would not surprise me.

Like many nervous system depressors used with cough suppressant effects, (i.e., alcohol), DM can have depressant or stimulant effects. Being a sane person with a respect for the body God has gifted me, I have not tried 12 times the normal dose.

But this reminds me, PotatoError, liquor is a natural and time-tested cough remedy with moderate efficacy.

I was all geared up to delete this diary entry when I saw the title, but thankfully, it is refreshingly free from any trolly, techy content.

Carry on.

I'm glad that this diary had nothing to do with the material in the subject.

I had a little lie down earlier today after getting myself a bit worked up. When I woke up I felt renewed!

I think I have seen the light! All the helpful readers of this wonderful website have cleared the muck from my eyes. I now can see clearly, more so than ever before!

"Happy happy, joy joy" as the saying goes.

Regards,

I'm not sure why you changed the title of your diary, but I must admit I never knew you were HIV positive.

Such a shame really, such a waste. Then again it serves you bloody well right if you were a drug shooting, flaboyant homosexual.

But I shall not cast aspersions.

Get well soon,
gcsb.
