You play very aggressively on the queen side. I'd like to point out that Gnu/FreedomChess spotted the intent behind 3... b5 and immediately recommended I retreat the threatened bishop to e2. I'd file a bug report if I didnt know it would be received with a lunix threshold dissertation on the difference between a bug and an innovative legal move in beta.

I dont know what kind of AI they have there but its fairly shite. It isnt a matter of a bug! Its just really stupid coding. If a chess program does that the whole code is wrong on a fundamental level.
In no way feel that its associative with GNU - ive made a chess program which works better than that and I could have released it GNU..as it is, it sits uselessly on my harddrive. Whats the point in releasing something which other people have already done much better?

I don't know. Perhaps you should ask Lunis Toveldeez. Or RMS.

if I released my chess program noone would care - there are tons of them out there already.

With linux though - obviously people do care otherwise they wouldnt run it. There arent that many decent operating systems about whereas cheap chess programs are abundant.

With linux though - obviously people do care otherwise they wouldnt run it.

People run it basically out of ignorance. Most unix admins and tech savvy developers I am aquainted with run a combination of Windows2000, and some flavor of BSD (usually Open or Free).

The problem with Linux is that it is a complete duplication of effort for petty ideological reasons. BSD is FAR more stable, FAR more secure, and altogether a more pleasurable unix experience than Linux.

So, you see, if you release your chess program, perhaps loads of misguided morons will take it to their hearts, and it will become successful despite being worse than the alternatives. What have you got to lose ?

Maybe you misunderstand the point of linux (none / 0) (#12)
by PotatoError on Tue Mar 12th, 2002 at 11:59:19 AM PST
Its a toy. You cant play with Windows because you cant tinker with the source code. Some people actually enjoy making additions to the OS and improving it. Some people enjoy being able to understand how an operating system works and have their own operating system rather than windows which everyone has got.

Linux is so popular simply because it it the most popular open source OS. In many ways it out performs windows simply because of dedicated people working on one particular area. Linux zealots are capable of ideas just as Windows developers are.
The Windows Kernel is full of yucky encryption shit just to make Windows less easy to decompile. This slows it down...one example on how Windows isnt perfect.

The other week I heard someone on here mention that WINE can only run "pointless" apps like Notepad and nothing big yet.
But over the weekend I saw someone run the Windows versions of Quake 3 and Half-life under WINE. So its getting there - when you can run any windows program on Linux you can no longer use the argument that "Nothing is made to run on linux". At that point I might even switch to Linux. Im only using windows now because the linux ports of Quake 3 and other games are more difficult to get hold of.

This is the rare case where the circuitous reasoning is valid.

Popularity brings support.
Support brings popularity.

Same in manufacturing.

High-volume manufacturing brings lower prices.
Lower prices bring higher demand.
Higher demand requires high-volume manufacturing.

There are many more examples.

Loki Games. They've ported a significant number of games over to Linux and sell full packages, and also offer the binaries for download, although not all are on ftp.lokigames.com. Quake 3, if you're interested is at ftp://ftp.idsoftware.com/idstuff/quake3/linux.

Missing the point? (none / 0) (#17)
by Anonymous Reader on Thu Mar 14th, 2002 at 01:05:07 AM PST
I was under the impression one could "tinker with the source code" of BSD. So could it be, perhaps, that Linux is "a complete duplication of effort for petty ideological reasons"?

Indeed (none / 0) (#19)
by Anonymous Reader on Tue Mar 19th, 2002 at 01:58:24 PM PST
That, combined with the fact that there are many, many people all over the world who simply enjoy programming and aren't so concerned about the utility of what they write and more that they enjoyed writing it.

Linus Torvalds is one of those people. He made the original Linux kernel because he enjoyed it.

When the first move is in one of the corners, the second player must play the middle square - otherwise player one wins.
