The official news agency of the Canadian Government has put up a new bulliten warning us of a new threat by hackers. This time they are infecting our Internet Cafés.
"Maffin says there are ways to get at someone's files. At one Internet Cafe in Vancouver, he was able to find resumés and photos -- personal information that a thief could use. "

I can't believe how difficult these hackers make our lives. First we can't be safe on our own computers at home, now we can't trust Internet Cafés. What's next, we have to be careful on work computers?

How many decades did it take them to come up with that brainwave?

Everyone should know by now that if you dont own a computer it should be treated as locally insecure.

For a start you dont know what software the owners have installed that may be logging what you do, watching what you do or even sending them copies of files which you delete.

This could be an internet cafe OR your workplace. At work you have to worry less about hackers than your own boss.

In an internet cafe the risk is even higher - because so many anonymous users use each computer you cant be sure that one of them was malicious.
Perhaps one of them found a way round the internet cafe's (often poor) security and planted a trojan on it to gather such sensitive information as is in the article. Its an extreme risk.

My advice is to NEVER do anything personally confidential on ANY machine unless it is your own and you are reasonably sure it is clean.

Look, you don't have to prove your identity to use an internet cafe, so who cares if they are logging your actions?

Unlike your home computer, which the FBI could simply seize with a search warrant.

They dont need your identity. For example, if you were to use this site in an internet cafe and some shit has put a key logger on that computer then they have your adequacy login and password right?

Same goes for your mail account - and maybe, just maybe the malicious person will log in to your mail account later and maybe they will find personal information - such as your address, your real name, details of contacts you know, confidential messages, passwords to sites you visit or even credit card details. Even emails telling a friend where to meet and at what time. The good stuff links you to the real world which isnt a good thing to do online. The other stuff simply links to further avenues of exploration - for example if they found your password to a site in your inbox they could login to that site and maybe check the account information you have submitted there.

I dont know what you leave in your inbox or do at internet cafes - my original post wasnt directed at you - but I know that some people leave all sorts of confidential information in their email account and that was who the post was aimed at.

The FBI could seize my computer but Fortunately I have encrypted all the stuff I wouldnt want them to read. If they demanded the key to decrypt it then I would say I forgot it. Ive made the files look very old so that this is more believable. Who knows, by the time they do knock down my door in 5 years I might seriously have forgotten it.

Be happy with yourself and who you are. Next time you'll know not to try and outsmart our law enforcement agencies.

And look on the bright side. You can probably sign up for an educational program while in prison. Perhaps someone will teach you about things like punctuation and sentences. That would be something, wouldn't it?

...he keeps a trojan, ie. SubSeven, installed on his machine, and carefully erases all the trails, he can claim his machine was hijacked. It's extremely easy to falsify data, when you know what you are doing.

Better thing than encryption is steganography. There can be more reasons to keep a large porn collection than just a personal enjoyment.

Keyword: Deniability.
