 Help save Adequacy!

See that logo up in the corner? "News for Grown-ups", it reads. Well, if you want Adequacy to stay grown-up, you'd better join the new reform movement.
Many members on Adequacy take extremist conservative positions. This is good, because many people think conservatives are all liars, so we need to show them the truth. However, some members attempt to force their opinions onto other readers in a hurtful way reminscent of "trolling".

Now, remember, Adequacy has a no-trolling policy. (I was told this multiple times before I joined, because I was wary about some of the articles here.) If we want to keep this policy in effect, we should respect other opinions. So, to balance out with people who aren't in the movement, let's start giving liberals all 5s and conservatives all 1s. Preserve our great website! Help save Adequacy!

when stickers were money? And then you'd get all covered in sticker juice, and afterwards, you'd be like "I'm tired"?

Remember when everything wasn't fly? It's true.

Girl, I love you.

I have nothing meaningful to say, however, you misspelled the word "reminiscent." I therefore conclude that you are an idiot.

I should serve you a deletion for using the logo's headline, as that is a clear violation of Adequacy's copyright.

I will also link to Adequacy no less than 6 times.

Do you know what happens to liberal hatemonger weblogs that advocate drug abuse and child pornography?

That's right.

I hope that the Adequacy does not bow to pressure from this terrorist.

Why should I respect others' opinions? No, seriously- if somebody is a complete dipshit then I have just as much of a right to tell them so.

You really don't know how this site works, do you? Rating the comments themselves really won't have much of an effect on the discourse here. This isn't Kuro5hit, junior. And just because a few idiots out there didn't like my comment doesn't mean that I won't stop being mean and cantankerous if I feel like it.

Do you even know what being a "liberalist" or a "conservative" actually means?

Oh wait, I get it. We were warned about this, given ample signs about the coming plague. Bunker down and man the howitzers, folks- the Kurobots have started the invasion. This is obviously a pathetic attempt to establish a beach head on our shores. Be warned, son- our verbal artillery is fearsome, and your likes will soon be driven out.

Ooh! Anger! (3.00 / 2) (#6)

Or faux-anger. I doesn't really matter which it is. But the associations you make are interesting. Say "Lunix sucks" to an immature 14-year-old geek in his parents' basement (yes, I know, the stereotype) and he'll say "well MS sux0rs!" right back at you. Only the super-evil MS would slight Linux, as everybody else thinks Linux is great.

Now, say something about the AQ Stalins, and you get "This isn't Kuro5hit, junior". It's almost as if the Adequoid has honed a mental image of some other weblog being the most evil thing in the world. If you're dissing the big AQ, you're obviously a "Kurobot", like there are no other places that Adequact readers could have come from.

Personally, I welcome Mr NOW to the peanut gallery, for whole 10 minutes his account will last. Perhaps there will be less brown-nosing and a bit more honesty.

Anger? Hardly. Annoyed? Yes. (5.00 / 2) (#7)

Given: Mr. NOW believes that rating the comments will actually have a significant effect on the discourse here.

Given: Mr. NOW cannot effectively define liberalist or conservative.

Given: Mr. NOW cannot accept criticism, harsh as it may be. Instead, he goes around rating comments based not on content but on a narrow and superficial definition, effectively trying to moderate instead of argue, or something like that.

Given: Kuro5hin currently suffers from a very real threat of going off-line, and is apparently suffering a few server problems at the moment. Whenever that happens, apparently, the refugees straggle on in (I suppose someone that's been on this site longer than I have can support that - I remember reading a few posts and diary entries that addressed that issue).

Kuro5hin is the only weblog that I can think of where the comment ratings have any real significant impact. And the rest of the actions that he has taken seems to fit the bill for the regular Kuro5hin poster, does it not?

Your point is taken, and it is a good one. And I do appreciate it when certain individuals step up to take the piss out of this website (I remember Jvance always being worth a chuckle or two). However, Mr. NOW is just a moron. Not even PotatoError entertaining moron, just a flatout idiot. I don't know what the hell he's thinking with this "let's give liberals 5s and conservatives 1s" bullshit. I guess he never heard of debate. If he wants to "reform" Adequacy, he should start arguing intelligently, honestly, and not be afraid to take some punches (and throw a few of his own).

I guess we should all take a step back and take a look at my sig, too. This is just a website after all. It's often entertaining, occasionally informative, and not really that important. Does it need to be "reformed?" No. The US social security system needs to be reformed. You either like it here or you leave. Simple as that.

Apologies if I've appeared to have jumped the gun (which I don't believe I have). But people like him just annoy the hell out of me.

I think you're overreacting a little. (5.00 / 2) (#8)

Certainly, a plan like "let's give liberals 5s and conservatives 1s" is far too under-developed to be workable. For a start, the political spectrum is two-dimensional, the other axis being communist/fascist. But I believe Mr NOW's plan to shake up the comment ratings from their regular scoring should be welcomed. If anything, we'll get a lot of comments rated "3".

I don't think you're looking at the whole picture when you say comment ratings don't affect discourse. The ratings directly affect the egos of the posters, which as tkatchev wisely notes, are not normal, balanced people. "5"s encourage them to post more. The more banal "Lunix/geeks/teenagers suck" posts that get rated highly, the more we see of them. The positive feedback loop escalates until Adequacy reaches the inanity level of Slashdot.

I really do miss jvance. He was sharp. Unlike Mr NOW, but like myself, he rated style over substance, so it was 5s all round. I do hope he hasn't been electrocuted by his doorbell.

You're defending my plans even though I made a mockery out of them myself! What I'm actually going to do is rate the protest comments ("This is a bad link", "Your opinion is misguided") 5s, even if the people who are posting them don't get it, and the people who are just trolling along ("I agree completely", "Anime is Satanic") get 1s. I'm not attempting to stop everyone from posting, but hopefully it will screw up Adequacy enough that they'll remember me.

Doing so would sort of defeat the purpose of this web site. It says news for grown-ups. However, very little of what is here could actually be classified as "news". Most of it is just the opinions of various people, most of which are extremists of some sort. On top of that, most of the stories posted here are posted with the intent of starting an argument or making fun of some group of people. That sounds a lot more like a bunch of 6 year olds arguing, albeit over slightly more adult topics, sometimes.

Yes, if you remove the argumentative posts the arguing would not be as bad, but then this site would have nothing to do. Almost everyone here is a sycophant, and without people to argue with, the website would fade away.
