It's hard, I'm stuck at work, bored, waiting to enjoy my two days off.

But k5 is down, plastic is down, where can I get my fix of libertarian whinging?

On the plus side, one of my /. accounts has mod points, so post a link and I will endow your post suitably.

Perhaps I will scrounge up a laptop running Win95 and play Capture the Flag (not the first person shooter type, the actual DOS game).

	I don't go on slashnet IRC servers anymore, so I am curious if you have any information on it. If so, please share it. Something that could prove very unfortunately is if the GiZ people decide to fuck up adequacy next. [Reply]

	According to Hurstdog, it's a router problem. The site itself is just fine. Something potentially got hacked (we're not sure), but it certainly wasn't the K5 box. 	I think the screen shot is a fake. Even though there's not really a way to tell for sure, I assume that he had just opened that browser window recently because it is the last program on his taskbar. Also, the time that appears on the clock would corespond to the time being when you were in there asking, per the text in the IRC window. I know that K5 has been down basically all day today, so I believe that he would have had all of those programs open with the K5 window just sitting there since yesterday. While it's completely possible, it doesn't seem to be very likely. Anyways, I trust hurstdog to be telling the truth though, so thanks for the information. [Reply]

	Look in the bottom right corner of the IE window. The page was loaded from My Computer, not the Internet. That means he loaded it off his system and then just typed http://www.kuro5hin.org in the address bar. kwsNI

	Ironic, isn't it. Kuro5hin was the only site I could get to all yesterday because of big router problems in the UK which took down every ADSL line in the south, and today, K5's down with router trouble. BTW, I did a tracert, and it's failing before it gets to K5's box, but at a similar IP. Difficult to check, isn't it.

	It's been down over 24 hours now, I think. Haven't these guys heard of Service Level Agreements or 4 hour turnaround on equipment? If you can get that type of service in outdated, decadent Europe, surely the heart of the digital world can manage it? How's a girl supposed to organise her social life effectively under these circumstances!

	I believe that First Incision's above post is irresponsible and short-sighted. Software piracy--and, under the DMCA, emulators--are against the law. We all know why piracy is wrong. Piracy deprives developers of the fruits of their hard-earned labor, and in the long term reduces the range of products available to us in the future. When you download an emulator or pirated game, you're violating the law. Many justify their piracy by contending that, because old software has been replaced in the free market by newer software, this somehow means they have a right to download the old games for free. That argument is a gross distortion of reality, of course. If you are too cheap to buy commercially available software, you can get any game you want on EBay. But even if the games really were impossible to acquire legally, it wouldn't make piracy right. The law doesn't exist to be followed only when convenient. Back in the days before Napster was shut down, a much-linked-to image declared, "When you download MP3s, you're downloading COMMUNISM!" Like they say, it's funny because it's true. Copyright law is a foundation of our captalist democracy, and without it, our civilization would crumble into collectivist rubble.
