While the past centuries have witnessed remarkable and revolutionary advances in technology and learning, the accompanying moral advances have been relatively trivial. Individuals, corporations, and governments alike rapaciously compete for a plentitude of resources that is limited only by humanity's inability to equitably distribute it. The western world is overflowing with garbage culture, food, and recreation while less fortunate regions of the world are in the grip of desperate poverty. The prime catalyst for technological development is still the desire to destroy other people and advances in weapons technology races ahead of anything used for peaceful or constructive purposes.

It is a grim condition that humanity finds itself in. We have learned what we can do while neglecting to ask what we should do. While the suffering of the many bought luxury for the few, both stagnated morally, the former for lack of opportunity and the latter for lack of impetus. Humanity is as a child that never grew up, which in its immaturity wields tools beyond its ability. Nor is it likely that humanity will mature, for technology will bind the masses in moral darkness while the rulers will be bound by their addiction to the intoxicating power they wield. Humankind will sell itself into slavery to a master that will not be overthrown.

Humankind cannot be redeemed while technology holds it captive in a state of moral immaturity and decay. Technology grants power without demanding responsibility and by allowing individuals to wield immense coercive influence, it removes any perceived need to progress ethically. Formerly, the cooperation and respect of one's fellows were necessary merely to survive, but modern machinery and conveniences have rendered civil social interaction largely obsolete. No longer do people labor for what they need, but rather they frantically grasp at unnecessary luxuries, while exploiting and destroying those around them.

Our animal brutality remains, rendered obsolete by the disappearance of the conditions that it evolved to overcome. Once it was necessary that only the strong survive, so that limited resources might be best allocated for the improvement of the species, but those times passed millennia ago. Humanity has reached the utter limit of progress through selfish biological competition, yet we remain unchanged and continue to struggle in an absurd contest for which the prize is nothing at all.

If there is to be any redemption, it must come soon. The planet is being dragged toward a unified dominion, one that will hold monopoly on all power, resources, and technology. Should that state ever be reached, humanity will slip into a darkness from which it will never emerge. All hope of dissent and progress will be forever extinguished, and the human race will fester and stagnate until extinction finally claims it. Corporations and governments wander the earth as ravenous beasts, consuming all they encounter. Should they ever become as one, the earth itself would be devoured.

Freeing humankind to progress entails freeing it from the shackles of technology, but the foolishly complacent masses, weaned on MTV and McDonalds, will never consent to putting aside their conveniences and luxuries to pursue ethical development. Most would much prefer to breed the next generations of corporate slaves than consider the future of the species. It seems inevitable that humanity must be compulsorily liberated from the chains that bind it.

If the human race is to be saved, it must be forcibly reverted to the pre-technological era, the age of moral tempering and development. We have no choice but to bomb ourselves into the stone age. Thermonuclear warheads are the only tool humanity possesses that has the ability to free the species from the blight of technology. When earth's major cities lie devastated, the survivors will be able to create a society based on principals of peace and cooperation, free from the corrupting influence of the corporate and governmental oppressors.

The religious writers were wrong. Humanity needs not a savior, but a destroyer.

My friend Pol Pot (4.50 / 2) (#3)
by Richard Nixon on Mon Jul 23rd, 2001 at 12:02:47 PM PST
Was trying to do that in Cambodia. Year zero, empty the cities and get rid of anyone educated as they were hard to re-educate. Didn't quite work out but he was a brave man trying to do it...

You are all sick (4.33 / 3) (#4)

This is a sick website. You all need to get some psychological help or counselling. Why all this misanthropy and hate ? It makes me so sad. I don't think I will be visiting this site again. I have never seen anything quite so sad and pathetic in all my life. Why do you need to spend time wrtiting all this garbage ? Why do you hate humanity so much ? Are you suicidal ? Well don't think you have to take the rest of us with you. I am very happy with life on planet earth.

As an American, you should be happy that by a lucky accident of birth, you happen to be living in the richest country in the world. Your life could be so much worse. There are millions of people out there who would gladly swap places with you. Think about that next time you post such hate-filled garbage.

Excellent! (4.50 / 2) (#5)

That rant about how wonderful America is (simultaneously assuming everyone is USian) was a very nice touch. Overall, an excellent goodbye comment. (and I should know about goodbye comments -- having been a Kurobot, I was subjected to a fair share of them)

Please, have a five!

And the strongest of kudos to QPT, for possibly the best and most thouroughly well reasoned article I've seen here thus far. I quite simply can find nothing to criticize here.

There's a problem with this (4.50 / 2) (#6)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Jul 23rd, 2001 at 12:48:10 PM PST
And that is human nature. So we bomb our civilization into the stone age. Fine. One day in our simple village of caves two people will have an argument (a very human thing). One of the persons will eventually pick up a rock and bash the others' head in. Technological progress will start once again as people scramble to have bigger and bigger rocks. And don't think that passing a rock-control law will have any effect. There are plenty of dangerous unlicensed rocks out there.

You know you are correct (4.50 / 2) (#7)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Jul 23rd, 2001 at 12:53:42 PM PST
But soon after these primitive men have their rock fight, another more intelligent primitive man will come along. And he will tell them that they should not fight, because if they do, the big boogeyman in the sky will punish them, not now, but in the afterlife.

The fighting men will then follow this wise primitive, for they do not want to be punished, and this man has told them that will happen if they do not behave. And so they cycle of ignorance and violence is completed.

Wheels within wheels.

Nah (4.50 / 2) (#8)

I think that the people will listen to the wise man and after careful consideration of his ideas...

they'll bash his head in with a rock. Giant invisible boogeyman indeed!

And so the oppression continues... (4.50 / 2) (#9)
by Slobodan Milosevic on Mon Jul 23rd, 2001 at 01:46:34 PM PST
The few trying to oppress the many, by means of something very close to religion. This 'wise primitive' will have these men cowering in their bare feet for fear of what may come upon them in the afterlife. And who is the only one who has that knowledge? The 'wise primitive.' Oppression of the many is what has always been wrong with humanity. It is what will always be wrong with humanity. Bringing us back to a state non-technology is not the answer! We must all work together so that everyone can be equal. Only at that point will we have reached true enlightenment. Only at that point will we be able to look at ourselves and say: "Today, I am a human being."

Suck it up (5.00 / 1) (#16)
by Victors Monster on Tue Jul 24th, 2001 at 08:32:48 AM PST
Equality does not equal enlightenment. Nor is altruism a litmus test for true humanity. If altruism were human nature, there would be a lot more of it going on now and in history. In fact, people are greedy, dangerous, and ignorant. And we have to protect ourselves from each other, simple as that. I don't understand this quantum leap you want to make between now and an egalitarian utopia that would be "truly human."

You bleeding hearts all regurgitate Marx-Engels as if it's still relevant. Opressed majority, indeed - always forgetting that Religion was all humanity had for a moral compass for aeons.

As Lenny Bruce said, you need to keep people from shitting where they sleep. It's not oppresion when someone says "no" to your spoiled ass. If it weren't for society, you wouldn't have the liberal education you are clearly taking for granted. Get a haircut and get a real job!

The cool thing about violence and suffering is that it is a constant - whether or not we bomb ourselves into the stone age, we will continue to make each other suffer, and that's just a fact of life. Be thankful you live in Babylon (America), where that type of suffering is at a minimum.

>>Equality does not equal enlightenment.

I don't know where you brought this from, it is not something that I had said in my original post.

Is the best way to protect ourselves from each other to have a few with the ability to oppress the many? These few have shown time and time again that they are very likely to abuse their power. They are no more altruistic than the rest of us. Equality (and yes, I am talking about ideals here) is one way in which humanity may glimpse a greener pasture. Sure there will be those that will try and control, those that feel it is their lot in life to have everything served to them on a silver platter. And they will try to have this come about by breaking the backs of those that are unable to want a better life for themselves.

Thus are the pure evils of a capitalistic society!

I am thankful every minute that I do not live in the wasteland that is today's USA.

2001: The Real Deal (3.33 / 3) (#13)
by sventhatcher on Mon Jul 23rd, 2001 at 07:41:35 PM PST
Everyone knows that the whole violence and rock-bashing thing was started by a giant black monolith that came down out of the sky.

If we blow everyone up and evolution starts again from the apes, there won't be a monolith this time around, and we'll never be violent again.

This is clearly a genius idea, and I will be happy to risk my life to steal the necessary plutonium to make these bombs.

History Repeats Itself (3.75 / 4) (#10)
by sventhatcher on Mon Jul 23rd, 2001 at 04:17:44 PM PST
While this is a bold idea and would set back the tide of destruction that comes with human greed, it would be delaying the inevitable. No matter how far we set back the clock, humanity will make the same mistakes we made the first time around.

The author needs to relax and accept that this is the way reality is supposed to be. The intelligent and wise are meant to suffer. The ignorant and evil are meant to rise to power.

So has it ever been.

So will it always be.

Fight the system however you can, but you can never destroy it completely.

Homo-Sap-ien self analysis. (4.00 / 2) (#11)
by Anonymous Reader on Mon Jul 23rd, 2001 at 07:14:05 PM PST
I see no exaggeration of, "what most often, we do". It's understandable that most would find this a harsh analysis - the first liar and lied-to is so often: ourselves, as we rationalize vanity and greed in the name of "self expression".

Then we manufacture Gods just like us! to further justify our behavior via the familiar, "In Her Name.." - as we burn the next witch, scam the next 'underdeveloped' country of its natural resources. All so that we can drive 7300 # Urban Assault Vehicles - to pick up the greaseburgers at McD - for the kiddies. And return to Fantasy Nation reruns. And the Office. To get more. But never enough.

We won't go quietly of course. Only a hardy species like the cockroach -- is likely to survive the fury of our final trashing of this once beautifully diverse oasis, surrounded by light years of not-too-friendly for mammals, alternatives.

We could, of course begin to actually grow up. That could work.

Nahhhhh, we play - it's all we do. (And pontificate, natch about our Nobility!)

(Fortunately none of this is real. Row row row your boat... Merrily merily .. life is but a dream.)

Your statements remind me of something...oh yes, I remember now. Piles and piles of dimwitted criticism of western culture in general and consumerism, specifically.

Chuck Palahniuck(sp) made the finest statement in this reguard almost a decade ago, and monkeys like you are doing as they have seen.

This in spite of the fact that the western mindset has kicked the shit out of every other culture on earth. Economically, the western world (read: America) has dominated, not through war, but global economic policy, every other lousy culture out there. Of course, nothing is perfect. But you have to credit America with being good at what she does.

You've lost all credibility with me (5.00 / 1) (#15)
by suick on Tue Jul 24th, 2001 at 08:26:17 AM PST
I was nodding my head for most of your comment, easily taken in by what seems now to be blatant mis-information. However, reading your comment about the US controlling through it's economic policy is simply laughable.

The "western world" is hardly just America, and people foolish enough to presume so cannot be given credibility by even the most mediocre of intellect. How could you possibly miss any of the other countries on those two continents "North and South America?" Regardless of what you and your US media would have the rest of the world believe, the US can hardly take credit for even it's own economic policy.

As every non-USian well knows, US economic policy is directly influenced by the exports of Central American countries such as Honduras, Guatamala, Taliban, and Brazil. Namely, US economic policy is directly influenced by the drug trade. With US children having been subverted by the products of these countries for over a generation now, it's quite obvious who's in control and of great influence to the world. Why else would the previous generations of US policy makers have put into place a system which comes down so heavily on their Central American neighbors?

Clearly, the US generations-past were afraid that their influence on the world would disappear--they were right. We now live in a society controlled by the unofficial economic powers in Central America, and each day they take more and more of the world.

So don't dismiss the western world as being simply the "US." Clearly, by doing so, you just show the brainwashing Daddy-Media gave you last night, and I'm seriously embarrassed for you.
