It is a grim condition that humanity finds itself in. We have learned what we
can do while neglecting to ask what we
should do. While the suffering of the many bought luxury for the few, both stagnated morally, the former for lack of opportunity and the latter for lack of impetus. Humanity is as a child that never grew up, which in its immaturity wields tools beyond its ability. Nor is it likely that humanity will mature, for technology will bind the masses in moral darkness while the rulers will be bound by their addiction to the intoxicating power they wield. Humankind will sell itself into slavery to a master that will not be overthrown.
Humankind cannot be redeemed while technology holds it captive in a state of moral immaturity and decay. Technology grants power without demanding responsibility and by allowing individuals to wield immense coercive influence, it removes any perceived need to progress ethically. Formerly, the cooperation and respect of one's fellows were necessary merely to survive, but modern machinery and conveniences have rendered civil social interaction largely obsolete. No longer do people labor for what they need, but rather they frantically grasp at unnecessary luxuries, while exploiting and destroying those around them.
Our animal brutality remains, rendered obsolete by the disappearance of the conditions that it evolved to overcome. Once it was necessary that only the strong survive, so that limited resources might be best allocated for the improvement of the species, but those times passed millennia ago. Humanity has reached the utter limit of progress through selfish biological competition, yet we remain unchanged and continue to struggle in an absurd contest for which the prize is nothing at all.
If there is to be any redemption, it must come soon. The planet is being dragged toward a unified dominion, one that will hold monopoly on all power, resources, and technology. Should that state ever be reached, humanity will slip into a darkness from which it will never emerge. All hope of dissent and progress will be forever extinguished, and the human race will fester and stagnate until extinction finally claims it. Corporations and governments wander the earth as ravenous beasts, consuming all they encounter. Should they ever become as one, the earth itself would be devoured.
Freeing humankind to progress entails freeing it from the shackles of technology, but the foolishly complacent masses, weaned on MTV and McDonalds, will never consent to putting aside their conveniences and luxuries to pursue ethical development. Most would much prefer to breed the next generations of corporate slaves than consider the future of the species. It seems inevitable that humanity must be compulsorily liberated from the chains that bind it.
If the human race is to be saved, it must be forcibly reverted to the pre-technological era, the age of moral tempering and development. We have no choice but to bomb ourselves into the stone age. Thermonuclear warheads are the only tool humanity possesses that has the ability to free the species from the blight of technology. When earth's major cities lie devastated, the survivors will be able to create a society based on principals of peace and cooperation, free from the corrupting influence of the corporate and governmental oppressors.
The religious writers were wrong. Humanity needs not a savior, but a destroyer.
