 I am now truly amused

So, I submitted a story on monogamy. Yes, I had posted it once before on K5, long ago before many people logged in. I have the feeling that a lot of people hadn't read it before, [editor's note, by jsm] Christ, I wonder why :) and I spiced it up for this site with lots of additional hyperlinks. Just to be kind.

First, the child got to it and "edited it without mangling it too much." One of the editors wrote me an email asking me for the original text, because he thought it worked just fine that way. So I sent the "non-mangled" text with a quick explanation of my feelings on the matter.

The child posted the story before that editor could restore the original text. I politely requested the original text be added, which it was. The story seems to have generated some discussion. At least 34 posts worth of comments. The first six were removed, presumably editorial comments. No worries. Of the next 29, only six were allowed to stay. I'm curious as to what was being discussed that required deletion. [editor's note, by jsm] Wonder no more. We were discussing the fact that you were trying to foist second-hand content on our front page

I guess I'll never know. Apparently, one of the editors (I know which one I think, but I'll keep silent) has decided to remove the story completely.

I am now amused and confirmed as the vilified scapegoat of Adequacy.org. You guys are too funny.

I'm glad you're amused (3.00 / 6) (#1)

But the editing of your story was a definite improvement. Your intro was boring and gave no indication of what the body of the story contained, your title was misleading, the first paragraph of the body was completely unnecessary and the rest of your story wandered and failed to make any strong point.

After elby restored the original text, about 8 of the editors voiced their opinion that, without editing, the story was not up to snuff. That's why it was pulled. It was just too poorly written to meet our standards.

I hope this clears things up.

Well... (5.00 / 2) (#8)

I had mixed feelings about the article. Its point basically boiled down to "let's all respect our differences", which may not be terribly new or profound but is worth repeating from time to time. It was written tolerably well but was perhaps a bit too long. I thought, however, that once it got posted it should have stayed up.

I don't think that you're being personally scapegoated or targeted, by the way. It's probably more that we're a new site with several editors, and we need to work out some of our policies. Please feel free to write some more for us.

Not an unfair assessment (3.00 / 2) (#9)
by SpaceGhoti on Thu Jul 26th, 2001 at 11:29:30 PM PST
I'm a big fan of everybody respecting each other's differences. I'm also a fan of allowing those differences to see the light of day. This site proports itself to be "News for Grown-Ups" and promises that "Controversial opinions, passionately held." Given the comments posted that weren't deleted, I'd say my article was controversial enough to satisfy even the most discriminating rabble-rouser. Not that this stopped anybody from exercising their gods-given right to hypocrisy. I could be angry about it. I could be bitter about it. I choose to be amused.

Please feel free to write some more for us.

Thank you for the invitation, but I think I'll stick to pointing out logical inconsistencies among some of the more prolific trolls (Infinite in Their Wisdom) here. I'm tempted to make some forecasts, but I promise to refrain.

is not "Controversial Opinions, Boringly Expressed". Your article was a bore. That's why it got pulled. Deal, with, it.

Thank you for the invitation, but I think I'll stick to pointing out logical inconsistencies among some of the more prolific trolls (Infinite in Their Wisdom) here.

That certainly sounds like a better use of your time than saving the world, getting rich or making love.

By the way, your use of the polysyllabic Latinised "Pointing out logical inconsistencies" rather than the succinct Anglo-Saxon "biting" is an example of the prose style which got you edited in the first place.

Children will play (3.00 / 2) (#2)
by opalhawk on Thu Jul 26th, 2001 at 02:28:22 PM PST
Children will play, and when their toys break, or their careful plans turn against them, they will break their toys against the wall and go sit in a corner and cry.

Pathetic really. Pay them no mind. They shall not live to maturity.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

by SpaceGhoti on Thu Jul 26th, 2001 at 02:34:59 PM PST
Why would I pay them any mind? I don't get offended by children, I merely attempt to correct them when I can, and leave them to their parents when I can't.

Since I don't own the machine, I can't correct them. I'll just leave them little reminders of their childish behavior. Trifles, really.

Don't play the game. It's an old credo, but it still works.
