Do you ever wish you had been born into a different family? Maybe you were born a few decades too late. Or maybe you always wanted a bunch of brothers. Well, in case that's you, here's a starter set of random family memories, circa 1950. I don't know whose family it is, so it might as well be yours.

PS. Just so you don't think I'm a family thief, a couple summers ago I acquired a case of slides, these among them, for a few dollars at an estate sale.

It really hurts to be accused like that. Who are these thugs who find it so easy to use violent language? How can they be so callus?

I still can't find the link to the This American Life story on finding people's stuff inside cars in the junkyard and reading their abandoned mail. TAL's archive is hard to search. Maybe someone knows which one I mean.

I like the pictures you chose. They seem like a really tight and loving family, although I think there is a lot of unspoken tension there too. The middle boy is obviously gay, but that's not what I mean. Everyone is just nervous about something. Like they are afraid it isn't going to last. I don't think they've always been that affluent, and they worry that they aren't carrying it well. Do they act like they deserve it enough? What do people think? Should we really care what they think?

Tough time for that kid to grow up gay.

have been struck blind by your penetrating rays of charisma, and since they obviously can't compete they try to prod at your underbelly. See?

I'm actually just as afraid of them.
