 Turning Unix into Windows

OK, I've been toying around with FreeBSD for a few months now and I like it quite a bit. In fact, I spend more time 'surfing the net' and 'chatting' in Unix than I do in Windows.

And that is what I feel I need to talk about today. I love Unix, but I also want to be able to use my Win9x/NT/2k programs in it, too. I'd also like to have a win 'classic' gui to move around in.

I've managed to get the gui, as you can see here, but as of now, I still can't run my windows programs. I'm thinking that, since I have a dual-boot system with winMe and Fbsd, I should be able to mount my fat32 partitions (heh heh, I said "mount"), install wine, and have it use the APIs in c:\windows\* instead of the incomplete, shoddy APIs that come with it (wine). This is what I'll be doing later today.

If I could have a system with the stability of Unix, the security of Unix, and the software of Windows, all in one nice little package (and at an overall cost of $0, since I can get win98se/me and freebsd for, well, free), I would be so happy. And I may not even have to worry about viruses! Yes

May God have mercy on my soul... :)

How this diary would look if all referecnces to things best posted on the Sourceforge forums, or some such "hacker" hangout, were removed:

[...] Windows

removing "hackerish" terms (none / 0) (#2)
by Anonymous Reader on Tue Oct 23rd, 2001 at 09:21:27 AM PST
You forgot to remove "Windows", "Win9x/NT/2k", "programs" and "WinME".
Afterall, surely those big bad hackers wrote all those code red, nimda, etc virii?
Or are you now saying that hackers only use non-microsoft operating systems and that anyone who codes on windows in their spare time isnt a hacker?

"How this diary would look if all referecnces to things best posted on the Sourceforge forums, or some such "hacker" hangout, were removed:"

I think this means that I am showing how the diary would look if everything that really belongs on a "hacker" forum were removed.

Why do you think "I love [...] Win9x/NT/2k programs" belongs on a Sourceforge-type forum also? Perhaps you're right, I dunno, but then you'd be wanting to delete the entire diary. Well, I guess "May God have mercy on my soul... :)" could stay.

Yeah, you're right. The whole thing should be changed to simply read: "May God have mercy on my soul... :)"

Short, simple, and it works.

windows hacker forum (none / 0) (#5)
by Anonymous Reader on Tue Oct 23rd, 2001 at 10:02:53 AM PST
I meant that I think a windows hacker forum counts as a "hacker hangout". So therefore terms such as "Win9x/NT/2k" should have also been left out. Are you really saying there are no windows hackers?

Anyway, Id prefer it if none of the diary was deleted, Im a freebsd sys admin myself and am rather curious to see what appears here.

Advice (5.00 / 1) (#4)

I'm feeling generous today, so I'm going to give you no less than 2 pieces of advice.

  1. Pay for your copy in WinX. Pirates always end up with a wooden leg and a hook instead of a hand, neither of which, I imagine, is very convenient.
  2. Purchase a copy of wmware, and you'll be able to run as many operating systems as you like at the same time. A truly remarkable piece of software, if I may say so.

the unfortunate thing is that I currently have a budget of $40... I don't think I'll really be able to afford a vmware license. Also, I don't really even know if vmware works with FreeBSD (I had a bit of trouble getting it to work with linux kernels > 2.4.9, too).

if I could somehow squeeze as much functionality as I can out of the system I already have, I would be a very happy guy.

Well in just two days time, you will be able to get the first four of those in the shape of Windows XP.

Admittedly, the overall cost will be a little more than your stated budget, but hey - like Perdida said, you'll be doing your patriotic duty too!

I've actually been quite tempted to get Win XP... if it is, as they say, based on Win 2k, it might actually be what I'm looking for.

Of course, the thought of having to install virus scanners kinda gives me a limp noodle, but overall, it seems like a rather nice OS. I've grown quite accustomed to patching and updating my system, so hopefully, I won't have to worry too much about being struck down by Code Red or Melissa, or any of those other net abominations.

Analisys of OSes (none / 0) (#17)
by Anonymous Reader on Wed Oct 31st, 2001 at 04:00:28 PM PST
Unix = still kicking ass
Minix = UnixLite for PCs
Linux = what Minix shoud have been
BeOS (POS) = overly-streamlined NetBSD, users claim it's not
AmigaOS/Amiga = making a come back
Windows NT4 = fairly easy administration, if it ain't broke...
AtheOS = pretty nice, but may be side lined by Linux and OSX
DOS = a tweaked QDOS (a sloppily backwards engineered CP/M)
CP/M = What PC Users WOULD BE using if not for MS
MacOSX = FreeBSD for the desktop
Windows 95 = incomplete
Windows 98 = what 95 should have been
Windows 98SE = what 98 should have been, & good gaming OS
Windows Me = great excuse to upgrade
Windows 2000 = fairly nice, slight learning curve for NT admins
Windows XP = MS self promotionalizing BLOATWARE that treats you like an idiot

Cygwin32. On Windows 2000, it's all the Unix I need. Other people have suggested Windows XP, but I personally can't recommend it for all the various cliché reasons. Fisher-Price-inspired GUI, draconian product activation, constant harassment to use Passport and MSN, etc. If you've got a copy of Windows 2000, I would suggest getting the aforementioned Cygwin and buying a copy of Starnet's excellent X-Win32 server for all the Unix you could ever want.

While you could get MacOSX which is comprised of FreeBSD and Mach 3.0 to form Darwin, you could also download FreeBSD for the desktop.

Hell you could also download DarwinOS for the PPC or x86 platforms if you wanted. Of course you wouldn't get the pretty GUI.

I believe you mean FreeBSD desktop. Why screw around with a crappy half-assed GUI like the one the aurthor seems to like?

I just found this.

it's always nice to see people debate the merits of Unix and Windows, respectively, even if they don't know the difference between Linux and Unix. :)
