Aww, poor dear, he's broken his leg. Fucking whiner. My sister broke her leg and it didn't make the headlines.

But then, your sister is probably not a multi-millionaire, married to one of Great Britains top pop acts. She is probably not one of the most talented footballers of a generation either.

As an American supporter of Manchester United, I have to say that we could use MORE coverage of Beckham's injuries in the States. As it is, I have to rely on the Internet for news.

Unless your sister is Jamie Redknapp.

might look better if she ate something every now and then. Every time I see her picture, I want to offer her a nice roast beef sandwich.

David Beckham isn't married to one of Great Britain's top pop acts either. He is married to one of Great Britain's most useless mime artists.

it was aright dirty tackle, too.
Don't you US fellas have any soccer news on the telly then? I though it was growing in popularity now?

For a sport to be popular in america, it has to be rough, challenging and exciting. Sorry if I don't take you seriously, but I can't expect too much from people who lose their minds at a godforsaken soccer game.

Yep. That popular sport of golf - rough, challenging and exciting.

Perhaps you mean "American-invented" sports, like monster-truck racing. You're damn right about that, those giant tyres get me excited.

you scurvey-infested commoner. You need to realize that the grass really is greener on the other side of the pond. Golf is for old men--everyone knows that.

As far as monster trucks go--well, forget it. I'll just pick up some Midol for you on the way home from work today, K?

Soccer in America (none / 0) (#6)
by First Incision on Fri Apr 12th, 2002 at 07:41:55 AM PST
I have found that playing soccer is becoming more popular in America, but soccer is not popular as a spectator sport.

Evidence of this is our cultural stereotype of the soccer moms. A large number of male children of my generation have been raised on soccer. I played it for 3 years as a child. My brother played it even longer and was on his High School team.

Yet neither my brother and I care at all for professional soccer. Here in the US, soccer is still generally considered "kid stuff."

This might change in 10 or 20 years as more kids grow up, but I don't think that changes the fact that watching someone else play soccer is more boring than watching baseball.

I actually really enjoy watching soccer (particularly World Cup-level games) but can see how most Americans find it boring.

So here's an idea - what about having WWF-style soccer? Throw out the current penalty system and replace it with one-on-one extreme fighting. So if a defender trips a striker in the penalty box, not only does the striker get to take a penalty shot, but he also gets to body slam the guy who took him down. That'd be cool.

Add to this handicapping goalies (blindfolding, tying hands behind backs, etc.) and then you'd get some serious scoring going on. D.C. United 24, Chicago Burn 22. Oh yeah!

You ever think that maybe it's because David Beckham is a famous athlete who people actually know? Aside from the people on the street corner where your sister works at nights who really knows, or cares about your sister?
