Someone on the news was interviewing some important British guy (possibly one of your quaint nobility). He was saying that Americans don't appreciate the help they are getting in the War on Terrorism. He said that the US government and US media was over-emphasizing the US's military might. Because of this, the average American doesn't realize how much work in Afghanistan is being done by NATO members.

He is right. We don't say "thank you" enough. It seems when we hear of acts of military derring-do in Afghanistan, the heros are often, Brits, Canucks, or one of our other faithful allies.

So, as an American, I would like to say thank you to the peoples and militaries of the UK, Canada, Germany, and our other staunch allies. The War on Terrorism would be much rougher without you.

I have never been given the responsibility to fly a US bomber, but if I was, I would hope to never blast a friendly.

But, at least from what the US Media tells us, the Canadians on the ground fired first.

Nice spin... only CNN could make it look like the Canadians were to blame, they're world-class propaganda if you didn't already know.

by First Incision on Sat May 25th, 2002 at 08:33:37 AM PST
Regardless of how CNN is spinning it, the pilot said he was being fired upon. Of course, I have absolutely no idea what was going on.

They played the tape from the pilot and ground controller's radio conversation on TV back when it happened. I can't seem to find a transcript on any of the major news sites. But from memory, the conversation went something along these lines.

Pilot: "Taking enemy fire, request permission to strafe."

HQ: "Permission denied. Mark the target and get a closer look."

Pilot: "Taking enemy fire, request permission to strafe."

HQ: "Permission denied."

Pilot: "Strafing target."

Of course, pilots are allowed to defend themselves if they think they are in danger.

But when can we pull our troops out? We have our own problems u know. I suspect that most of these Al-quaeda fighters are simply soldiers. I doubt they are actually dangerous terrorists at all but simple soldiers with aks. Just as dangerous say as the new afghan governemnt soldiers. So why bother fighting them????? Why did we send our troops all the way to fuckin africa just to fight a few armed civilians (ie soldiers). What a waste of fuckin time. Bush is just playing along with some game...make himself look like an adult in front of his people.
THe media and US government spinning shit yet again.

I mean what fucking good is killing 1000 al quaeda fighters going to do? they arent the terrorists u know. ALl the big guys will get away.

The avoidance of a nuclear holocaust based on the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction was what kept the US in line.

This is why all the scaremongering about a potential nuclear war in India/Pakistan is just so much hot air.

As for getting their asses kicked, I've seen American, Russian and British troops getting their asses kicked in Vietnam/Somaila, Chechnya and Northern Ireland respectively.

When one side is fighting for a cause and the other is simply a hired killer, this is often the result.

Asymmetric warfare dudes, its really like, one-sided.

Al Qaeda "soldiers" (none / 0) (#12)
by First Incision on Sat May 25th, 2002 at 01:30:16 PM PST
While I agree with some of your points, the Al Qaeda fighters are not simple soldiers. The "simple soldiers" in the region would be the Taliban. The ones being called "Al Qaeda" in Afghanistan are Saudis, Yemins, Chechens, and other "tourists" (as they are called by the locals) that came to the region because they wanted to get some rocket-propelled grenades and shoot stuff. The world in general (and Afghans in particular) will be much better off once Afghanistan is no longer a resort for gun-toting thugs.

When will our troops get to pull out? My guess is never. We did set up a puppet government there, and we will probably have to keep it running indefinitely. You may notice that we still have troops in Germany and Japan. It's been over 50 years, and I don't hear any calls for us to pull out of Germany. Eventually people get used to the situation.

thats shit (none / 0) (#15)
by PotatoError on Sat May 25th, 2002 at 08:57:28 PM PST
we know that there are many warlords in afghanistan. Many of their own soldiers are quite used to wanting to "shoot stuff". The weaponary they possess will be no different from al-quaeda troops. Im sorry but your government is distorting the difference between al-quaeda and taliban.

In reality both are mixed and the same. In fact many soldiers in the "new" afghan army (or police force as CNN likes to put it) are probably ex taliban and maybe even ex al-quaeda fighters. The afghans dont give a shit who they fight for as long as they have a home and leader.

What happened at WTC was organised - not the work of the fighters the US is going after now. Sure the fighters will be killed but they are just soldiers and can be replaced easy. Its just pure pointless waste of time.
