Okay, so that's a bit of an exaggeration. Or is it? It always seems that whenever I do a linux install, there is always at least something that screws up so badly that I have to re-do the entire thing. Not to mention that once the install is complete, my first task has to be downoading the kernel, configuring it to fit all of my particular needs (Appletalk, for example), finding out what works and what won't work in this distribution, and generally totally re-working the way that I use my computer.

Why do I do it? I'm a fool, that's why. I figure that if I get the newest version of Xfree86, it'll have both anti-aliasing and 3D acceleration, so I could play some of the games that are sitting idlly on my system right now while keeping my text viewable.

When the new KDE breaks Konquorer, I move to Mozilla, and it doesn't do text-boxes very well. Hell, it doesn't even render form labels properly half of the time. So, I figure getting a newer build of it will fix these problems. I get the new build, and suddenly, flash and java won't work.

Now, I'm going for the latest in the distribution. I'm fortunate, because I have several machines around me that have 100mbps connections to the 'net and CD burning drives, since it seems that the ISO I downloaded at first was corrupt, and I have to try again...

Damn. I've downloaded all three 650meg+ ISOs twice now. I'm burning nothing but coasters. I need to get back to working on this now...

Wish me luck.

Why don't you just use win2k? (none / 0) (#1)

Installing any OS appears to be a bitch (none / 0) (#2)

In the 2 times that I've installed 2k, something has always screwed up and even when I've gotten it on the machine I have to go and get the latest drivers for everything. Its just a different skillset.

2k is still one of the easiest OS's to install IMO although I find Debian to be very easy to install, thats probably down to the mirror of .deb's I keep on my gateway that allows me to just hook a machine up to my network and Debianise it to my taste. Its a vast improvement on NT4, which was a complete and total nightmare.

To get NT4 onto a blank machine I think the method that I ended up following was to boot with a floppy, use some unsupported command line switch to get it to copy all the installation files to the HD in a state ready for installation & create some installation floppies, boot using the installation floppies and install from the files on the HD. My recollection is rather hazy, but I clearly remember that all of the regular installation methods caused the installer to "STOP" when I tried to get it to use the mass storage driver for my motherboard (as the one in the installer didnt work). Compared to that, 2k was a breeze (and most of the hassle I had with it was down to there being 3 other OS's on the machine at the time).
