i just thought this was a bit strange have you been modding up your own comments to get trusted user status?

Opalhawk, Motherfuckin Spork and I are the same person!

Even if all of us have separate and, at least as far as Opalhawk and I are concerned, valid email addresses. I invited her over here to see the idiocy that was making me laugh.

You could ask me before you make these assumptions. It's considered a courtesy.

I think that actually improved it. Honestly, I hadn't thought of that option. I don't think I'll add it in future polls, but it is a departure from my normal style.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

The way that Opalhawk moderates all of Spaceghoti's to 5 so that he can get trusted user status and abuse the moderation system, is a bit suspicious. When so few people moderate comments, it's very easy for a trusted user to hide comments from normal users. I don't think that any of those comments was worthy of being hidden (not least because one of them was my own :) ), so if you're going to "abuse" the system by moderating yourselves to 5, it's OK for osm to "abuse" the system to balance things out.

Perhaps this should go in the faq, however zero ratings should be reserved for only spam and posts with no content whatsoever. Not for things you disagree with or that you think are mean or anything like that. We like to encourage discussion on this site, not censor it.

We like to encourage discussion on this site, not censor it.

What then is your argument for some editors deleting perfectly valid posts? Is that not censorship?

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

that's not censorship (none / 0) (#19)
by osm on Fri Jul 20th, 2001 at 03:30:01 PM PST
that is purification.

Are you saying you are a puritan? (none / 0) (#28)
by opalhawk on Fri Jul 20th, 2001 at 05:47:12 PM PST
Lets see what you are really saying... either way you call it....

Main Entry: censor
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): cen·sored; cen·sor·ing /'sen(t)-s&-ri[ng], 'sen(t)s-ri[ng]/
Date: 1882
: to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable

Main Entry: pu·ri·fy
Pronunciation: 'pyur-&-"fI
Function: verb
Inflected Form(s): -fied; -fy·ing
Etymology: Middle English purifien, from Middle
French purifier, from Latin purificare, from Latin purus + -ificare -ify
Date: 14th century
transitive senses : to make pure: as
a : to clear from material defilement or imperfection
b : to free from guilt or moral or ceremonial blemish
c : to free from undesirable elements intransitive senses : to grow or become pure or clean

So, osm, you admit that it is out of pure personal bias that you delete comments? It is okay for editors to do it, but not users? Doesn't that fall under this heading?

Main Entry: pre·var·i·cate
Pronunciation: pri-'var-&-"kAt
Function: intransitive verb
Inflected Form(s): -cat·ed; -cat·ing
Etymology: Latin praevaricatus, past participle of praevaricari to act in collusion, literally, to straddle, from prae- + varicare to straddle, from varus bowlegged
Date: circa 1631
: to deviate from the truth : EQUIVOCATE
synonym see LIE

Or is it this one?

Main Entry: hyp·o·crite
Pronunciation: 'hi-p&-"krit
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English ypocrite, from Old French, from Late Latin hypocrita, from Greek hypokritEs actor, hypocrite, from hypokrinesthai
Date: 13th century
: a person who puts on a false appearance of virtue

Whatever the case may be, it sounds to me like the editors need to get their heads together and decide on some hard and fast rules instead of arguing amongst yourselves in public. Not only does it make you look like fighting children and small minded ninnies, but it also alinates the very people you aim to draw here to debate with.

We must regretfully decline your generous offer. You must understand this is for the best interests of your own health. We wouldn't want to have to actually hurt anyone... too badly...

Note that I don't control the editors on this site. If some of them are acting inappropriately to the mission of this site, then we will have to discuss the issue with them.

However, I think the more likely case is that our working definition of a perfectly valid post differs.

Okay... (4.00 / 1) (#14)
by SpaceGhoti on Fri Jul 20th, 2001 at 03:12:04 PM PST
So you know that Opalhawk and I are the same person because?

If you bothered to do some research, you'd find out we log in from different IPs. Do a whois and you'd find all sorts of information identifying us.

Wait! There are other people who have voted for me! They must be abuses of the system as well! Furthermore, look at all the people I've disagreed with and voted down to 0. Three times out of dozens of posts. A clear abuse of the system.

Get a grip, guys. If I were attempting to be a karma/mojo whore, I'd be a lot less blatant than this. Opalhawk is my friend. We tend to agree with each other. Coincidentally, I find Motherfuckin Spork to be readworthy, as well as Electric Angst. Does that make them guilty, as well?

So you know that Opalhawk and I are the same person because?

When did I say, or even imply, that you were the same person? Go on, I challenge you to find it. Your whole tiresome rant about checking your IPs etc to prove your individuality was entirely without reason.

Furthermore, look at all the people I've disagreed with and voted down to 0

I think that was my point. You voted them to zero, hiding the comment because you disagreed with it, not for any decent reason. I had to moderate those perfectly reasonable comments up again so that other users can see them, which was both tedious and unnecessary.

I agree with elby that zero-rating should be explained in the FAQ to prevent any further "misunderstandings".

I stand corrected. (3.00 / 3) (#23)
by SpaceGhoti on Fri Jul 20th, 2001 at 04:12:01 PM PST
I went back and looked at the posts I'd modded down. Two of them I don't remember moderating, particularly since one of them is a reply to another. That doesn't make sense to me. Re-reading them, I went and modded them back up.

The last one I confess to abusing the system; I removed my moderation from the comment.

When did I say, or even imply, that you were the same person? You didn't, and I therefore retract the statement. However, you appeared to be defending the Editor (Infinite in His Wisdom) who did, so I assumed you were toeing the party line. I submit my apology.

I assumed you were toeing the party line.

As elby implied elsewhere in a post to this diary, there really isn't a party line on most things. I agreed with osm simply because I'd noticed the mutual moderation. There's no great editorial conspiracy, we just happen to agree with each other on some things.

Since I am a firm disbeliever in conicidince and you implied that one is occuring, I'm automatically assuming that there is a huge vast conspiracy which probably involves at least 3 government agencies going on with the editors here.

I'll be watching you.

Invasion of the SpaceGhoti (4.66 / 3) (#16)
by sventhatcher on Fri Jul 20th, 2001 at 03:25:43 PM PST
SpaceGhoti keeps rating up my comments, since I am currently not him my only logical conclusion is that he is a preparing an evil Pagan ritual to invade my body since he knows the admins will one day take his trusted priveleges away if they haven't already.

By rating me up, he assures that once he's assumed my form, he will have trusted priveleges once more and can run amuk rating down comments however he so desires.

I'm calling out for the editors to stop this dirty evil sinful plot before it comes to it's deadly conclusion.
