I cannot help but notice that many of SpaceGhoti's comments have been censored, yet many others have not. Is there some explanation for this discrepancy?

Thank you.

Paging Dr. Science, paging Dr. Science...
Damn them.
My lack of creativity of late continues to astound me. I must have something really good about to appear, given this seemingly interminable dry spell.

In my Ethics and the Internet class, we are discussing the Jonathan Lebed case: the kid who ran a pump and dump scheme by spamming the Yahoo! Finance boards with false claims about big insider deals going on at little companies he's just bought into. We're going off this Michale Lewis NYT article that paints a rosy picture of Lebed and tries to say that "everyone does it" so it's OK.

I tried posting several links to financial sites that have unbelievably clear explanations of what a pump and dump scam is, and no one seems to understand. They still think some TV finance talking head making a quarterly earnings projection is doing exactly the same thing as Lebed. And that that makes it OK, which is the fallacy of common practice. Not that anyone cares.

Oh well. Explaining securities is certainly no job for me. But you'd think they could at least read. I even quoted streetlawyer's comment from back when Lebed's story was on K5. No effect.

Have I ever mentioned, that while Gonzaga is a good school, it doesn't actually have admissions standards? True. They let anybody in, same as a web log...

Censorship? (5.00 / 1) (#1)
by bc on Sat Jul 21st, 2001 at 11:06:00 AM PST
What comments of Spaceghoti's have been censored? As far as I am aware, none.

We only delete trolls and worthless crapflooding comments, not legitimate opinions.

♥, bc.

Who are you? (1.00 / 1) (#7)
by opalhawk on Mon Jul 23rd, 2001 at 02:50:10 PM PST
Who are you to tell somone if their opinion is valid... no, not even just valid..... Who the hell are you to tell somone if their opinion is their opinion or not?

How are you going to know? What if somone posts somthing that they honestly and truly belive in and you delete it as a troll? What then? I agree with hiding comments that may be offensive, but isn't that what your trusted users are for? Moderating the forum? Why have trusted user status implimented on this site if the editors are going to delete the comments of people they don't agree with, and chastise the people who attempt to use their status to mod anyone down? I really don't understand the policy guys.

I really wish you would come to some friggin conclusions and perhaps post a F.A.Q. About what really constitutes a "troll post". I don't see how anyone can take you seriously, even in your joking around until you (the editors) get it together.

You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

deleting comments... (5.00 / 1) (#2)

Unless you're reading the page all day it's sort of hard to notice when comments get deleted. :)

What do you mean? We really haven't deleted all that many comments.

Actually... (5.00 / 2) (#3)

...I was wondering about he ones you hadn't deleted. They seemed... out of place, and were interfering with my enjoyment of the site. I mean, where does the man get off, saying such things. Thinking such things! It is just unnatural, that's all.

And what about the children for the love of Jesus Christ Almighty!

Dude... (5.00 / 4) (#4)

shh...

He (sorry if you aren't, but you sound like a he) gave one of my comments a five.

I mean, OK, it was a crap comment, but dude, it was the first time I've been rated up. (And I wasn't even drunk when I posted it). Surely we can all just get along (especially if we are voting each other (me) up).

You realize, of course, that flattery will get you everywhere.

A troll's true colors.

Yeah, I knew you'd get a kick out of it. (5.00 / 2) (#6)

Jesus is going to get you for all this, by the way. No comment is ever hidden from Him.
