 Just curious

What happens when, say 15 years from now, the psychology "professionals" finally admit that they still don't really have a clear understanding of how the human mind's "chemistry" works? What happens when the animated diagrams in the TV commercials that illustrate how an "imbalance" impaires a person's ability to "function normally" are revealed to be about as accurate as Miss Cleo? What medication will you take to help you cope with the knowledge that you've spent thousands of dollars over decades of your life on the modern day equivalent of Mesmerism?

Who cares? (none / 0) (#1)

The United States will have degenerated into rival, warring, tribal states by that time.

I predict that "mesmerism" will be the least of your problems. (Compared to staying alive, for example.)

Yet they all will still be able to kick russian ass in the Olympics.

My mistake. Compared to other comments of yours I've read, it looked like you'd cranked your game up a notch or two.

According to my tkatchev playbook, your next response will either be "whatever" or a zero rating. Maybe some crude sarcasm. Let's see!

We should get some amusing "hip""hop" or "ghetto" music out of a tribal warring USA, then. Music that is compellingly hypnotic, I'd bet. Maybe some cool (albeit low budget) films as well.

They don't? (none / 0) (#2)

My housemate will be very surprised to hear this. She'll be the first to admit that modern medicine haven't fixed all the problems in her brain, but she knows what will happen if she goes off her medication. Her neuropsychologist knows enough about her brain chemistry to keep her on an even keel, which is impressive considering the amount of brain damage she suffered from vehicle-related head injuries. She can still draw on her own nursing background to trust him.

You dont specify the nature of her[1] injuries, but assuming they are "psychological", you should know this: If your housemate ever runs out of pills, inform her that she can just as easily be stunned into normal behaviour with a few sedative blows to head with a blunt, heavy object.

[1] Or is it him? What is it with pc twits who demure on gender? Do you think we care if your housemate is male or female or do you fear the implications for your sexuality? No one cares if you're homo or hetero and neither is permission to turn the English language into an awkward abomination of neutral and unspecified genders. Fact is, it's very gay to write housemate. Nothing less salacious than 'him' or 'her' will do, preferably linked to an image of the plushy, upholstered slut in question.

What, the "vehicle-related head injuries" didn't specify the problem clearly enough for you? Okay, how about "brain trauma induced through high-speed collision in a multi-vehicle accident?" Or would you be happier with "she bumped her head and feels bad now?"

On the occasions when she is unable to maintain her medication, she becomes wildly erratic. Her memory isn't what it used to be and never will, but with her current medication she's at least functional. That's a step above mental midgets like yourself.

And I did it -- despiting the gaping head wounds and injuries to my genitals -- by strength of character alone.

What, the "vehicle-related head injuries" didn't specify the problem clearly enough for you?

Sorry, I thought you were replying to zikzak's reference to psychology professionals. Psychology professionals dont treat physiological trauma.

On the occasions when she is unable to maintain her medication, she becomes wildly erratic. Her memory isn't what it used to be and never will, but with her current medication she's at least functional.

Hmmm. Sounds like she might be suffering from low self-esteem.

What medication will you take to help you cope with the knowledge that you've spent thousands of dollars over decades of your life on the modern day equivalent of Mesmerism?

How 'bout taking responsibility for your own life and the decisions you make, and constructing a value framework that helps you do so? It's bitter medicine, to be sure, but possibly the only one that really works.

Empathy (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by Anonymous Reader on Sun Feb 24th, 2002 at 03:39:51 PM PST
You've never dealt with someone who's clinically depressed, have you. Your glib Dr. Laura moralistic solution is orthogonal to the problem.

What do you do when you construct a value framework, and take responsibility for your actions, but your reasoning faculty is so warped by your depression that you conclude "taking responsibility" means blowing your brains out?

You blow your brains out ?

Clarification. (none / 0) (#21)

Oops, I was thinking more about those without serious chemical imbalances. Obviously, as someone who doesn't suffer from said imbalances, I don't know what life is like for those who do. My comments were more directed toward those neurotic, self-obsessed people who just feel the need for therapy. All of those folks can now feel free to dump on me too for being cold and unfeeling.

Dr. Laura? Ouch. I'll have to work on my empathy skills a bit, apparently.

just ask Miss Cleo? She should know what medication would best help us...sorry, them, to cope, should the situation you've outlined come to fruition. Though it sounds like she's a bit busy at present!
