 Saying Goodbye

Yesterday I said goodbye to a couple people who have been an important part of my life for quite a while. For any number of reasons, there always comes a time when you must bid farewell to those who have done so much for you. On Saturday, March 16th, 2002, I parted ways with the guys who work at the nearest liquor store.

Who are we?
I didn't think too much of what I was doing at first. I approached the counter with a bottle of my favorite gin in hand and decided to casually mention that this would be the last bottle I would be purchasing from them.

"You're going to stop drinking?", one of the men asked with a raised eyebrow.

"Oh hell no," I replied, "I'm moving."

We then spent a bit of time discussing my plans as other customers came and went. At the end we shook hands amicably and I walked out the door for what I can only assume was the last time.

As I drove home I pondered the exchange I just had. Surely most people don't develop this sort of relationship with liquor store staff. I wondered what it was that made the difference for me. I thought maybe I was incredibly charismatic and made a strong impression on the folks, but to be truthful I don't believe I am very remarkable in either appearence or manner.

Suddenly the truth became apparent to me. This particular store, one that I frequented on a very regular basis for a long time, did indeed have something unique; something to set it apart from other establishments; something which caused the staff to know me well and to be concerned about my future lack of purchases from them:

They're just a hell of a bunch of swell guys.

Yeah I have been in the same situation reciently.
I also said goodbye to a Gyro stand and a really great underground record store that I often freequented. Both places knew me by first name, knew what I liked and didn't like, and were also dissapointed that I was leaving. I got free t-shirts out of it though, so it was not as traumatic as it could have been. But I swear those were the best goddamn gyros a man could ever buy...

I miss you gyros...

Shinkansen!!
