On his first birthday, his parents will put him on a table, and uncover his eyes. Before him, he will see a
shot glass, a piece of bread, a coin, and a
rosary. Depending on which item the baby picks up first, this is supposed to predict if he will be fun-loving, healthy, rich, or religious, respectively.
My aunt has bought a brightly colored kiddie rosary specifically for this purpose. She's quite worried about having an alcoholic grandson.
Surprisingly, I can't find much on the web about this ritual. There is a passing mention on the Polish American Club, and there's a mention of it on this birthday page.
Has anyone taken part in this ritual? Do you know of any other interesting traditions that cruelly determine the future life of an impressionable child? (Discipline our 14-year-old for drinking? He picked the shot glass; can't fight his destiny!)
