 Delicate Question for Muslims

 Author:  Topic:  Posted:

How can I pose this question so that you hear it in the way it is intended? It is indeed an essential question to be asked at first by a person raised in a different tradition who is first taught the first thing about Islam: that Islam includes already the religions of Christianity and Judaism and supersedes them, in essence. Please correct me if I have overstated this.

Out of this, perhaps overstated, premise I ask honestly: has it not occurred to Muslims that by telling Christians and Jews their religions have been superseded by the newer set of beliefs that is Islam, these Jews and Christians might be rather offended and unwilling to learn and listen or even smile?

We are trying to save them (none / 0) (#1)
by Anonymous Reader on Sat Nov 24th, 2001 at 03:01:45 AM PST
Allah has promised perdition to all nonbelievers. What Allah promises, Allah delivers. If we express ourselves sternly, it is because the struggle to join all humanity in brotherhood of obediance to the loving will of God is an extremely serious matter This infantile concern with being smiled at is the last thing on the mind of the true follower of the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad.

Our remaining days are few. The judgement at the end of time is at hand. If we act harshly it is because we see the glint of the sword of Allah closing in on the world. I am sorry if there are no Islamic Teletubbies to prance and giggle and beep nonbeleivers on the nose until they see the truth shining forth from the pages of the Koran, but we do what we must to save as many as we can. ISLAM. LIVE IT. LOVE IT. BE IT.

I was too indirect in my attempt at politness. How about putting it this way:

Don't tell me my religion is obsoleted by your religion or I will spit at you and call you the son of the dog that beat me over the fence.

That is as rudely as I can put the question. Do you understand now?

Jew and Christians (none / 0) (#4)

Think harder, Inden. Judaism and Christianity and the word "superseded". And the word "hypocrite".

Are you calling Jews and Christians Hypocrits? (none / 0) (#5)
by Inden on Sat Nov 24th, 2001 at 05:40:47 AM PST
I suppose you are calling Jews and Christians hypocrits for not strictly adhering to G-d's laws but believing instead in a more flexible approach to theology?

So we pluralists fight religious wars with the fundamentalists of the Christians as well as the Muslims. Or more accurately, we defend ourselves from their terrorism on the military as well as the political (read abortion, creationism, homosexual rights) realms. We leave you in peace, why must you continually seek to be in our face and not let us live in harmony together?

Come to think of it, Falwell did come right out and declare his agreement with Osama Binladen that it was just G-d's will punishing us for our immorality didn't he? Arrest Jerry Falwell! Crusade against the Crusaders! Jihad against the Jihadi!

That's exactly what you want because war is your power and your game. I will rely on my non-violence in the face of your violence. We shall see who is more true to Christ or Allah or Hashem in the end.

Key word "pluralist". (Read: "I am a winging liberalist.")

Game over, your true colors flying, Inden.

Truth be told, Jews are hypocrites....
As a student of religion and philosophy (currently doing my majors), I have read most sacred texts (including the Qu'uran, Bible, Torah etc.)...I have read the Satanic Bible, and found it to be a whole lot funnier than evil. Yet on reading the "sacred" talmud of the Jews [the talmud being the real sacred scriptures of the jews, which they want no non-jews to read because of it's contents], I found myself appaled at how evil the jews actually are. It doesn't strike me as being unfair on the jewish nation that they were booted out of almost every european country, even before the "holocaust" (which btw is also a crock os shite)... I say kill em all, let <insert deity of choice> sort them out.... I'll join the muslims if push comes to shove, coz hey, at least they're honest about things.... Allah (SWF) will provide the muslims, and my deity will provide for me....We will eradicate satans minions, the jewish "nation".

Disclaimer: Jerry Falwell does not represent Christianity as a whole.

So please: if you get mad at his comments, or the comments of any other "fundamentalist" jerk, get mad at JUST THOSE PEOPLE. I've been a devout Christian for 20 years, and the Jesus of MY Bible taught us that our roles at Christians was to love one another, not condemn one another. The Word says, "The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love." (Galatians 5:6, paraphrased.)

Also: "The Son of Man" (that's Jesus Christ) "did not come into the world to condemn the world, but that the world, through Him, might be saved." (John 3:17)

Christianity is a great religion. Jerry Falwell is a doofus. Don't get the two mixed up.

That wasn't my understanding of the Koran (none / 0) (#3)
by osm on Sat Nov 24th, 2001 at 03:28:08 AM PST
I've read a translation. Though, I've heard it doesn't translate well. Whatever. I was actually quite surprised when I read it. Having been exposed to the countless media coverage of hostage-taking, etc. My understanding is that the Koran is amazingly inclusive of both Christianity and Judeism, suggesting that all of those religions worship the same God.

However, I believe Muhammed considered worshipping more than one God incorrect, which presents problems with Christians who believe that Christ is God (the Trinity and all that). I think, though, if you strip out all of the cruft that was shoved into the Bible by the Romans to help resolve concerns one group or another had about scripture (the Trinity being one of these concoctions), then Judeism (Judaism? I'm too lazy too look it up), Christianity and Islam could probably coexist quite peacefully.

Of course, that's assuming all of those groups want to coexist peacefully.
