Discover the Russia You Never Knew.

Now that the Cold War is over, I firmly belive that we, in our different cultures, should familiarize ourselves with our respective cultural heritages, without the centuries of baggage of prejudice and ill-will.

Prejudice and ill-will? (none / 0) (#1)

You know, tkatchev, I remember the cold war (toward the end of it, anyway), and I can honestly say that I knew of absolutely no one who felt prejudice or ill-will toward the Russian people.

I used to have a coworker from Russia. He came here just after the cold war. He's in his 60s. He pretty much said the same thing to me.

Personally, I think this would be an ideal time for the U.S. to start buying as much oil from Russia as they can produce. Let the Arabs go broke and find out they don't have shit without the rest of the world buying their oil. Then they can kill each other and the rest of us will live in peace and harmony! Just like the hippies of yore!

Well, we'll have to get rid of China first.

I would like agree with you and tell the Arabs to go fuck themselves, but I'm afraid they might return the favor. What goes around comes around, I guess.

Besides, Siberean oil is mostly an academic asset. At the present level of oil extraction technology, it's too expensive and impractical to pipe oil through 3000 miles of permafrost.

...I'm afraid they might return the favor

Oh? With no money to buy arms? That would be interesting. Actually, it would be hillarious.

Siberean oil

I thought the problem was keeping up the maintenance on the pipelines and the fact that the equipment manufacturing facilities are now in a different nation. That could be remedied with investment, which our government would probably be interested in now.

It's a question of geography. (none / 0) (#4)

The Arabs have it easy -- basically, all they need is to stick one end of a hose in the sand, and the other end into an oil tanker.

Siberian oil, on the other hand, has to be transferred to a tanker through a thousand-mile-long pipeline, with some of the worst weather conditions in the world. Not to mention that practically nobody at all lives in the places where there is still oil left.

So pessimistic for a Christian (none / 0) (#5)
by osm on Sun Feb 3rd, 2002 at 02:01:24 PM PST
All we need is a stronger Germany. Just look at the top news item on this page. Would Natalie Portman show up at a fanclub meeting? And then ANNOUNCE IT ON A WEBPAGE????

I think Eva just nudged Ms. Portman into second place.

Anyone wanna buy me a ticket? I don't fly, so it will have to be a boat and then a train.

thanks.

Christianity is a deeply pessimistic religion, in a certain sense.

but the foundation of Christian morals (the Ten Commandments) reflects negative* ethics, i.e. 'thou shalt not'. Maybe this is why?

*This isn't a subjective statement, or at least it isn't intended to be one.

Christianity is based on the two commandments of Christ, (which is why it's called Christianity, after all) not on the ten commandments of Moses. (Which are rather a basis for judaism.)

See link: The two commandments of Christ.

The US is guilty of criminal negligence.

We could have spared the world a lot of time, money and agony if we'd just bombed Russia out of existence in the beginning.
