 What is PotatoError, anyway?

Yea what? I mean lots of people assume that they know stuff about PotatoError - ie what he wants and how he acts. Mainly they just read this stuff from his inane posts. People will say "PotatoError is a troll" or "PotatoErrors very existence is the seventh sign of the apocolypse". Why? Because I read it.

PotatoError <---- the meaning (3.00 / 2) (#3)
by PotatoError on Fri Mar 8th, 2002 at 09:33:43 PM PST
Dont try and imagine the word "Potato" and "Error" seperately - thats what you are doing by joining them. You think Potato followed by Error and just get confused - after all by reading it procedurally it doesnt stir any thoughts except a potato that has gone wrong.

Thats what words are - they trigger thoughts. If you see a word your brain cannot help but read it and immediately thoughts are triggered. The thoughts triggered are different for everyone -some people will feel slight fear when they read the word "spider" for example while others wont. Some people will feel pleasure when they read the word "ice-cream" but some people would feel discust.
Unfortunately this is how the written word is impure. If a person reads a word which sounds like "spider" then they may subconciously associate some of the properties of a spider with the word. This is bad because a person afraid of spiders might get negative feelings when reading the word "spindle" for example. This would influence their interpretation of the word.
Take the words baloon, moon and plume. All these words represent things which have a certain degree of shapely largeness or bloatedness. So that when we say the word "spoon" we subconciously get a feeling of bloated shape. It is even true of Broom - which totally wrong really...we shouldnt have such a suggestion for this object but unfortunately it cannot be helped.

What im trying to say - and finding it difficult to say is that ideally a word should only transmit its own meaning to the reader. But in practice you get lots of subconcious information tied to words that is not related to what the word is describing.
Basically we only want to transmit a thought but by writing it down we have to also transmit alphebetical letters and phonetical sounds. These can interfere with the desired thought being transmitted.

For example if I made up a new word "Snike" you would immediately start associating it with stuff subconciously even though you dont know what the word represents. You might imagine whatever it describes is sharp because of its similarity with the word "spike" or maybe you would imagine its an animal because of its similarity with the word "snake"..this is only a basic association though - the kind of thing im talking about can also be more complicated. Like how words that sound quiet when pronounced - particularly words beginning in "sh" will arrouse a thought of quietness to the reader - this might not be what the word is supposed to transmit.

So you see when you read "PotatoError" you must not try and read it as two separate words. It simply wont trigger any thoughts except those transmitted by the word "Potato" followed by the word "Error"

Instead, try reading both words at once. Its difficult - you'll have to concentrate. By reading them simulataneously your mind will be considering both words at once - the various properties of both words will mix, cancel out and combine to form a totally different thought. Something not relevant to the meaning of the single word "Potato" or the meaning of "Error".

"Yes, I am a troll. This is a troll site, see? And I'm trolling you. The idea is for you to get mad at this 'stupid' explanation and then go off on a tangent about religion or philosophy or something and then beat on each other for another hundred comments or so. Pretty neat, huh?

Don't think of Dan Quayle. You're not supposed to. It's supposed to be sort of funny that you don't get the reference to one of America's most embarassing displays of ignorance. I'm British. British people are smarter and funnier and more ironic than American people.

Go on. Tell me I'm an idiot. I love that. It's hysterical when you get all wound up like that. I'm a great troll. One of the best there ever was. You fools are a bunch of worthless crapflooders, compared to me. I am the winner. You all lose.

You stupid fucks think adequacy is all clever and superior, but I laugh in your smug faces, because it isn't."

Holy cow, all I did was put two words together from a favorite pop song. And you don't even have to concentrate that hard when you read them.
