I would have to say you are doing the right thing. The vast majorities of colds are viral, and not be helped by antibiotics in the slightest. There is no cure for the common cold (although there are a few treatments). With the symptoms you described a doctor's visit would most likely be a waste of time and money.
Yes, the hot water therapy is great. Something I like is to boil a pot of water (add some spices if you want) and put a towel over your head and breathe in the steam. It is quite relaxing, even if the effect is short-lived.
Of course, I am also a big believer in the powers of medicine. Particularly, I like stuff with Dextromethorphan. It works wonders for the supression of coughing. NyQuil and Dayquil are good sources of this. A good thing you might get out of a visit to the doctor are some prescription-strength Dextromethorphan pills.
But like almost all things, they have side effects. You will be quite wired and hyper without some sort of depressant (like the types found in NyQuil). Being mentally hyper and fatigued at the same time can be annoying. _
