What was all the talk about America changing after September 11th? We were told repeatedly that the "world had changed forever" and that "America would no longer ignore the rest of the world".
Well, like the Millenium Bug, this has been revealed as total hype.

Before 11/9, American citizens didn't think the rest of the world was relevant, 75% of Americans don't even own passports. This alone was worrying but even worse, many US politicians believed that the rest of the world only existed 20% of the time. Bush himself, president of the most polluting country on Earth, rejected the Kyoto treaty out of hand. The world had endorsed it and was begging the US to endorse it too, Bush though had other plans and simply introduced everyone in the world to his middle finger.
However, after the towers fell down, we were told that America could no longer afford to ignore the world, that it's foreign policy of self-interest first would change, events like Bush's rejection of Kyoto treaty would become a thing of the past. Has this happened? Nope, Bush couldn't even be bothered to attend the Earth Summit last month. When just about every world leader made an effort and begged him to come, he tactically gave them his middle finger.
I admit, the middle finger is a great short term political tool but will it really prevent another Septemer 11th? |
