Wouldn't George "Best" be considered the "Best" football player of all time? (Where's Dick Butkis?) |

Will be one of the star features in next week's poll, "Silliest Name of All Time". ... the worst tempered and least consistent of the adequacy.org editors ... now also Legal department and general counsel, adequacy.org |

I've absolutely no idea what any of these names are. I guess that means that my poll choice would be "Fuck You".

I see nary a mention of Schumacher or Maradona, but than, in 1986 you were all in your nappies instead of watching the World Cup.
<p> So I voted for Beckham, since he's married to a Spice Girl, and has hopefullly reformed her form her evil show business ways. A. Rightmann |

And I remember when Maradona cheated and knocked England out of the tournament with a handballed goal. Had he not cheated, England would have gone all the way in that World Cup. Therefore, rather than vote for cheating Argentinians, why not vote for the captain of that fine England side, Bryan Robson? Alternatively, there are two of the 1966 World Cup winners in that poll, Nobby Stiles and Bobby Charlton. Both were members of the best England team of all time. Or are you too young to remember the 1966 World Cup? Adequacy.org - love it or leave it. |

In my opinion the word of the ref is final. If the ref did not say it was a handball then it wasn't.
But the English, as a whole, have never been good sportsmen so it's only natural for them to spread slanderous lies after a defeat. Of course, you are right in saying that Maradona is not the greatest player ever. That title would have to go to Pele'. |

Please include some decent players. I don't know who any of these football "stars" are.
To get you started: I'm sure you can think of others. Thanks. "Every time I look at the X window system, it's so fucking stupid; and part of me feels responsible for the worst parts of it." -- James Gosling |

For our USian readers, who may not be quite up to speed on European football and may be confused by the unfamiliar names, I humbly suggest that you would be making an excellent and well-informed choice if you were to vote for Eric Cantona in this poll. HTH. Adequacy.org - love it or leave it. |
European football? To laugh... (5.00 / 4) (#9)
by ucblockhead on Sun Sep 30th, 2001 at 05:14:58 PM PST
Hey, everyone knows that the only countries that can play decent football are the US and Canada. Has any country in Europe ever produced a quarterback worth anything? Surely not. As any good sports fan knows, the only thing Europeans are good at is kicking field goals. It's all that soccer practice. But we had to make special "do not tackle the kicker" rules so that they wouldn't be afraid to play with the big boys. |
I think all those pads help (none / 0) (#12)

You know, helmets and pads and armour. American Football players are thought of as a tad weak here, they don't seem to want to get dirty. I've broken a leg and an arm playing football (soccer to you, that is), I wish *I* could have worn pads and helmets. And there's always Rugby for the truly rough and ready - American Football just doesn't hack it. ♥, bc. |

Perhaps you would acknowledge that there is some merit in Australian football? In fact, many people with wide experience of various spectator sports claim that Australian football is the most spectacular and entertaining of them all. My AUD.02 Greg |

Some WHITE males get together to come up with the greatest football players of all time and look who's on the list. A bunch of white males with a fucking token black player thrown in and to make it even more racist it's a black player that the entire world saw be accused (unfairly!) of murder. How about Jim Brown, or Barry Sanders, players who's were so far above the rest of the competition that they had to retire early for fear of boredom! Troy Aikmen? Try Emmit Smith, the black man who carried him on his back to three super bowl Championchips. It wasn't until Elway had Terrel Davis to take off the pressure of oncoming rushers that he finally managed to play enough mistake free football to finally win. |

True, Emmit Smith was a huge part of the Cowboys during the 90's, and not including him in the list is pretty sorry. Still, seeing as how Troy Aikmen's gay, you're really hard-pressed to call it "throwing in another good-ol' boy" -- In the dark times, will there still be singing? Yes, there will be singing. There will be singing about the dark times. -- Bertolt Brecht |

You just assume I'm white, is that it? Just because I post on a website? Do you think black men can't post on websites? You just idly stereotyping me away into a little box that you can handle.
Damn it, I take offense to that! Just because I picked out a few players and most happened to be white, all of a sudden I'm some sort of fucking cracker?!? Fuck, man! Do you also think black men eat watermelon and fried chicken? Do you think all black men are poor and can't afford computers? Do you think black men just sit around in the ghetto, drinking "gin and juice," trying to get "booty," and doing drive bys? Do you think black men aren't educated? Well do I ever have news for you! That my hero, Norbert H Stiles, is judged by the informed Adequacy readership the best footballer of all time.
A world cup winner with England in 1966, his bone crunching tackles and bull dog spirit more than made up for any defiencies in the so called 'skill'department. You can leave out your Peles and Maradonas as they might have had sublime touches but they weren't grafters like Nobby Stiles... |

Where the hell is Pele, eusebio and puskas ?
If a player hasn't played in England he can't be the best player of all times. For US poster, for more the majority of world population soccer is called futebol, and American footbal is called: 'men not qualified to play rugby'. |
Butcher the Bulldog! (5.00 / 1) (#15)

It is inconceivable to think of voting for anyone else _but_ Terry Butcher in any poll he appears in. The man deserves a gold star at least, for his heroic shirt dying exploits. Any man that can spontaneously change a shirt from white to red through the course of a game, gets my vote! |

ho ho ho! what a funny lot you are! ha ha!
choose instead from Pele Maradona Puskas Cruyff Di Stefano My money's on Maradona. Ok, he was a cheating, drug-addled little shit, but he transformed mediocre sides (Argentina, Napoli) into champions. |
