Where are the collard greens, fat back, pork rinds, fried chicken, watermelon, chitterlings, corn bread, cole slaw, and not to leave out our Korean contingent, kimchee?

and gorgeous people and nice, safe cities and pretty decent clubbing...

And fjords. Don't forget the fjords.

Finnish is the only incomprehensible language; the others are all Germanic and pretty easy to learn, as long as you can learn to sound like you're swallowing your tongue.

"Finnish is the only incomprehensible language"

Saami is a bit of a challenge, too. Finnland isn't actually in Scandinavia, though.

You left out the most beautiful thing of all about Scandinavia: The wonderful Socialist systems that lovingly looks after its peoples and provides for their every need.

I always forget that Finland isn't in Scandinavia. My geography is going down the ter-let, as they say down South...

I'm sure Saami is challenging. I'd venture a bet that Lapp is pretty difficult too.

As for those wonderful socialist systems, they seem to come at quite a high cost. But hey, if that's what those Scandis want...

Who came up with this poll? (none / 0) (#4)
by wumingzi on Sat Mar 9th, 2002 at 10:18:26 PM PST
Is this what passes for ethnic food in Chicago or something? Eech.

The poll authors, while apparently leaning towards "gross out" foods simply stuck with whatever our friends in Northern Europe eat when the cupboards are getting bare. They neglected that cornucopia of disgusting cusine -- Asia!!!!

We'll skip Kimchee right off the bat. Other than being hot and wilted, it doesn't rate. Koreans also eat dog, but I will report that once you get over the thought of eating Fido (it took me 5 seconds -- I fucking hate dogs), puppy meat is mighty fine eating.

The Japanese have natto -- fermented soybeans served with raw egg.

Southern China has chou dofu. This is tofu which has been left to soak in rancid vegetable stock overnight. At three p.m., rain or shine, the vendors hit the streets. When you catch a foul smell that makes you think the sewer pipes have backed up, you're almost to a stand. Continue 500 feet upwind, you're there.

(don't get me started on Cantonese. There's an old saying. "Anything with four legs except for tables, anything with two legs except for people." If you ever reach Guangzhou, hit the Sharmian Island public market. It will be an Experience. Trust me.)

Filipinos eat balut, embryonic chicks in their shells. After a few bottles of beer it'll seem great.

My top vote though goes to wu geng chang wang -- This is a Sichuanese dish which is seldom served outside of China, for one simple reason. It's utterly disgusting! A delicate stew made up of pig's blood cakes, intestines, boiled greens and chili peppers, it is said to be warming and good for the blood during wintertime months. I had a girlfriend who used to order this every time we went out for dinner with American friends. To this day, I'm not sure if she really liked it, or simply enjoyed watching white faces go green.

(At least in Seattle's Chinatown, you can get this at the more traditional Sichuanese resturants. Try to order it at your local hangout next time you're in. The staff will respect you, I promise!).

Filipinos eat balut, embryonic chicks in their shells.

Yes, they do. That's one of the reasons it was included in the poll, albeit under a slightly different spelling.

In fact, only 3 (4 if you're generous) of the poll options come from Northern Europe.

From the comments posted above, It would seem that so-called "ethnic" food is basically what the great unwashed eat, either on a regular basis or in troubled times.
This would lead me to belive that anything labled "ethnic" should be treated with the same contempt.

25 votes for vegemite at this stage. Has this site been infiltrated by Australians?

Has anyone who voted actually tried vegemite? It's a sort of salty black spread that you usually put on toast, though some freaks eat it out the jar or dry it out and snort it (joking on that last one!). I personally can't stand it.

If you must have black spreads on toast, you might like to try promite instead, it has a sweeter kind of taste and will make you 5-10% more attractive to the opposite sex.

A little anecdote* from here in Melbourne, .au, to help you appreciate the importance of Vegemite to our great country ...

The local Burger King equivalent, Hungry Jacks, sells a Vege Burger, which is, of course, a burger for vegetarians.

Anyhow, some idiot when ordering food at Hungry Jacks asked what the vege burger was. Upon hearing it was a vegetarian burger, he is quite disappointed, and replies "I thought it was a Vegemite burger. I was going to order one too ... "

Eauuugghhh !!!

But I consider all fast food to be ethnic american food. The fact is that it is tipically American, as the pizza is tipically Italian.

Pizza? Italian? (none / 0) (#20)
by wumingzi on Tue Mar 12th, 2002 at 02:59:35 PM PST
as the pizza is tipically Italian.

Well, pizza is Italian, but it depends on your definition of pizza.

"Real" Italian pizza is a dash of cheese, five drops of sauce, and a tablespoon of fresh basil on something as thick as a saltine cracker.

I don't care for it much, but my sister swears by it. She's also lived in Italy too long. She thinks having socialized medical care and an army which is the laughingstock of the world is a good thing as well.

"pizza" is as American as Chop Suey and California rolls!

Look, I'm Mexican, and I know that we're at least cooking all the food in the United States, so we deserve a spot on this list.

But wait... maybe Mexican food is not ethnic anymore because we're slowly taking the US over. I like that idea more.
