by Anonymous Reader on Fri Feb 1st, 2002 at 04:29:00 PM PST
There is no correct spelling for Usami ben Laden because it is not a real word. It's like "Linux Trovalds" where you just try to spell it how it sounds because it's not a realy English word.

Just because that is the spelling used by the American government in their CNN broadcasts does not make it correct. Now go back to your trailer park, and don't bother us again. |

Let's take this name in three parts, and let's start in the middle. "Bin." That's wrong on the face of it. It's not "ben"; that is a transliteration of Hebrew, not Arabic. But it's not "bin" either. Most scholars would settle for "Ibn." That's the best we have in English. "Laden" doesn't cut it either. That's like the Goldfarbs coming to the U.S. and changing their name to Green, or Gold, or Greengrass even. The best transliteration would be "Ladn," possibly "Lad'n" or maybe even "Ladin," as in "Alladin," which is short for "Ali al-Din." Let's choose that last option and review. We now have "Ibn al-Din," which would translate in Arabic as "the son of the second." Yes, that's the meaning of his family name. I'd wage a holy war and besmirch my family heritage if that were my name too. Now, onto that troublesome "osama-usama-sama-sama-hey-sama-ree-bop" business. In Arabic, Mosama (or Musama) means "smiling man," or "man of smiles." Let's say that that shortens into "'Usama" or "'Osama." There's no standing convention for whether to choose o or u in these cases--Arabic has no official vowels, only diacritical marks that guide the reader/speaker. So let's just can the vowel entirely and call the dude 'Sama, or Samy for short. So "Samy Ibn al-Din" (or Smiley, Son of the Second) is how I'd spell his name. |

Official 9-11 Story Impossible (none / 0) (#13)

=======================================
Russian Air Force Chief Says Official 9-11 Story Impossible [Posted 13 September 2001] ======================================= As one considers the terrible events of Sept. 11 and observes U.S. media reaction, so pervasive and consistently military that it appears choreographed, doubts increase. The following is from pravda.ru, a Russian language Website (politically centrist, nationalist). In some places the English translation is confusing, so we added alternate phrasing in brackets. - Jared Israel [Start report from Russia] "Generally it is impossible to carry out an act of terror on the scenario which was used in the USA yesterday." This was said by the commander-in-chief of the Russian Air Force, Anatoli Kornukov. "We had such facts [i.e., events or incidents] too", - said the general straightforwardly. Kornukov did not specify what happened in Russia and when and to what extent it resembled the events in the US. He did not advise what was the end of air terrorists' attempts either. But the fact the general said that means a lot. As it turns out the way the terrorists acted in America is not unique. The notification and control system for the air transport in Russia does not allow uncontrolled flights and leads to immediate reaction of the anti-missile defense, Kornukov said. "As soon as something like that happens here, I am reported about that right away and in a minute we are all up," - said the general. [End report from Russia.] ============================================ Pasted from: http://www.tenc.net/news/airf.htm |
