While examining my server logs, I was most alarmed to discover several attempts to attack my innovative (and COMPLETELY NEW) website. Fortunately, I am using quality Microsoft products to deliver this site to the internet (though I had no real choice, since Microsoft products are the only ones offering the modern technologies necessary to handle the cutting-edge content).

Thanks to Microsoft, not only do I have a complete record of these bizarre hacking attempts (using tools with such insidious names as "konqueror" and "mozilla"), but the offending persons (no doubt LSD-crazed antisocial teens) were deflected from even accessing the site at all.

I just wish to publicly thank Mr. Bill Gates and Microsoft for saving my innovative (and COMPLETELY NEW) website from the clutches of these vile criminals.

Your nested frames with multiple scroll bars confuse the hell out of me. Of course they have always done this, but I never got around to mentioning it before.

Innovative Web Design (5.00 / 1) (#3)
by doofus on Wed Feb 27th, 2002 at 07:21:59 AM PST
I believe the nested frames, colored background and colored links are all a part fo the innovative design osm is using on his break-through site. I, for one, am quite impressed with his graphic design sense, as well as his taste in women (especially Audrey). It's clear to me now why he required Microsoft products to serve up this site; "old school" technologies such as Apache were simply not up to the job.

The site www.clusterlizard.org is running Apache/2.0.32 (Unix) DAV/2 on Linux.

by Anonymous Reader on Wed Feb 27th, 2002 at 08:45:12 AM PST
That isn't possible. Had you read osm's diary entry you would have known that the site had withstood relentless attacks from hackers, how could it be running Lunix?

You must have typed the wrong thing into whatever hacker tool you used to glean that information (maybe you tried custerlizard.org).

Obviously, you are not using a supported screen resolution while visiting the innovative (and COMPLETELY NEW) website clusterlizard.org. Cluster Lizard is meant for what I consider to be a standard display resolution of 1600 x 1200.

When viewed at this proper resolution (no doubt unsupported by your non-graphical pseudo-operating system), there is only ONE set of scroll bars and the top and bottom of the display remain static. This provides the viewer with a nice "window" to experience the innovative (and COMPLETELY NEW) content while providing a continuous frame of reference.

This offers a sense of familiarity and comfort to the web-surfer, who has no doubt been confused and frightened by other website designs (which shall remain nameless).

Security Issue (5.00 / 1) (#17)
by doofus on Wed Feb 27th, 2002 at 12:12:08 PM PST
Perhaps screen resolution should be monitored by your advanced Microsoft web hosting tools just as OS and browser type currently are.

Any visitor using a non-standard graphics card or some sort of odd screen resolution setting should be reported to the authorities, just as they are with the other criteria I mentioned above.

Anything else would only reflect badly on your innovative (and COMPLETELY NEW) website, since non-standard compliant browsers, OSes and screen resolutions cannot render your pages correctly and thus (in the minds of unsophisticated "script kiddies") reflect badly on your graphic design vision.

These kiddies would probably say it differently, maybe something like, "Dude, your site sucks ass! What the fuck is wrong with you?" But the effect is the same - your good name is being dragged around in the mud because some l'il 4ax0r is trash talking your site because his set up is not up to the task.

It's almost libel, isn't it? It is almost libelous to display your page in less than its designed-to spec. But, since our courts (US courts, the only courts in the world where the rule of law prevails and everyone is judged fairly and impartially) are already clogged with frivoulous lawsuits, most of which are brought by the ACLU against hard-working, right-thinking Americans, then perhaps the next best solution is to track these outlaw OS and browser users via secret IP token tracking techniques and report them to their (step) mothers.

by budlite on Thu Feb 28th, 2002 at 02:31:36 AM PST
Is Windows 2000 not good enough for you?

And since when has 1600x1200 been a standard display resolution? Perhaps if you have a 19" monitor (which a significant number of people don't), but not otherwise.

Your site doesn't really meet a good deal of the unofficial criteria for being a very good site, actually.

Sir, thank you! (none / 0) (#28)

I am so pleased you have agreed to buy me a new laptop with a 1600 x 1200 resolution. Together with the fantastic Windows XP already on the laptop, and the Pentium 4 processor, this will allow me to enjoy your site as GOD intended. My old 1280 x 1024 laptop wasn't good enough, and I am pleased that your subtle "double scrollbars" effect showed me the way.

I also applaud your decision to show the site in the 'blind person' mode by default. In a day and age where vision-restricted webizens require to manually increase the font size to the "larger than Jupiter" setting, it is refreshing to see caring webmasters save them the trouble. This also has the handy side-effect of making the site readable without a magnifying glass at 1600 x 1200.

Fury's keen spelling ability (he even resisted temptation and left "please" untampered), rather I sense a difference of attitudes.

You see, real programmers are a benevolent lot, and itchy is no exception. This "Fury" guy shows too much bravado to be the pious, barefooted GNU/hippy who will save us shiny-shoe types from the spectre of M$FT.

There is ambiguity in my post. Apologies. I'm referring to our itchy chum, who both uses Linux and is a programmer (and "works on" Linux in the sense of programming kernel drivers, not in the sense of simply using Linux to run his computer).

Sir, (5.00 / 1) (#11)
by jvance on Wed Feb 27th, 2002 at 09:59:15 AM PST
In our test environment at work, we keep several "hacker" tools such as Mozilla for testing the security of our Microsoft IIS based web servers. I see that you have not completely closed your security holes. I strongly suggest that you deny access to ALL clients whose "user agent" identifier contains the (case insensitive) string "mozilla."

Additionally, you should immediately terminate any connection if the "client" sends any data containing "HTTP." This is the well-known "Hacker Trash and Terminate Program," which engineers at Microsoft have termed the cockroach of the Internet

Regards,

jvance

Just because you used Fucked Page Expressed on your Winblows machine to make the shithole half assed pages doesn't mean that your site runs IIS on Winblows.

Whoa (none / 0) (#26)
by budlite on Thu Feb 28th, 2002 at 02:24:54 AM PST
Iframes? IFRAMES?!! My god!

They do nothing for the layout of a page, y'know. Tables are much nicer and well supported. Or if you think tables are too "old", perhaps <div> and <span>?

Why not? (none / 0) (#29)
by The Mad Scientist on Thu Feb 28th, 2002 at 08:26:30 AM PST
Iframes? IFRAMES?!! My god!

Why not?

Yes, they are hard to operate with and completely break the layout when the screen resolution isn't exactly what the designer expected - but recent version of both Lynx and Links browsers handle them like normal A HREF links. So the only ones who has problems with IFRAMEs are the poor GUI users.

Maybe, but (none / 0) (#32)
by budlite on Fri Mar 1st, 2002 at 07:07:17 AM PST
That's still excluding users of older Netscape browsers and probably some others. I know not many people use them now, but until recently Netscape 4.5 running on a SunOS 5.8 server being streamed out to a 486 running Win3.1 (and Exceed) was the only choice of browser I had after 10PM in my hall of residence's computer room.

If a website uses iframes, I'd be screwed if I wanted to actually read it.

It's probably much better to use a flat page made up of separate components and stuck together using PHP, or ASP, or SSI. Or failing that, normal frames.

Definitely. (none / 0) (#33)
by The Mad Scientist on Fri Mar 1st, 2002 at 07:40:00 AM PST
However, the world will continue to be full of designers thinking their mission is to force everyone to use One Browser and One Platform and One GUI, and if possible One Screen Resolution.

Some of them even think that magenta-on-green are clever colour combinations. (Seen that on more than one site.)

However, nothing is really lost - it should be possible to adapt CGIproxy to convert unsupported tags to supported ones on-fly - ie, to turn IFRAMEs to A HREFs.

This approach could be also beneficial for making "lightweight" versions of webpages to browse through when abroad and having to pay hefty charges for amount of data transferred (ie, using GPRS). Yes, I hear the "protected copyrighted designs" crazies crying foul. No, I don't take care about them.

Yes! (none / 0) (#34)
by budlite on Fri Mar 1st, 2002 at 01:47:22 PM PST
I agree wholeheartedly.

The problem is that people who design websites to work in the widest variety of browsers possible are likely to be labelled hypocrites by the people who believe in the One True Browser idea. The reason? Because those well-thinking designers may design pages to work in more browsers, but favour to use perhaps only one or two (personally I tend to use Internet Explorer and Mozilla most).

It's a sad world.

I must say that ClusterLizard is one of the most innovative sites that I have ever seen. While Warmann.org was still cutting edge up until now, OSM has taken his rich, multimedia fantasies one step further with ClusterLizard.

ClusterLizard is a must-see!
